Default New here from Nebraska

Hello, just wanted to introduce myself...I'm from south central Nebraska and have been surfing around this site for awhile and there is a TON of knowlege around here! I recently purchased an OLD boat with an almost all aluminum outboard engine on it...the only thing I can get off of the engine is on the carb and it says AJ2A...there are other numbers in other places but I'm wondering the best guess for what engine this is? It's very small...the gas tank is on top of the engine and has the pull rope mechanism in the center of the gas tank...Any guesses? Look forward to talking with you folks...Thanks for your time!

If you could post a picture of the engine, it would help immensly. Welcome to the stak! many engines had the configuration you describe, so a picture would help nail it down.

Welcome to the Stak. I'm from 30 miles away in Kenesaw.
I've got an engine similiar to your description. If you want to start a collection, I'll trade it for about anything that is equally of no use to me.
Pioneer Village in Minden has a small collection of outboards, and I gotta admit that some of them are pretty neat.

Hi According to the Tillotson carburetor list on the ASECC your carb went on a Champion outboard. The year given is 1941. Jim

Wow! Alot of Nebraskans here! Thank you Jim for the idea...I know it is ancient, just didn't know how ancient, haha! I have never been to Pioneer Village and I have a cousin that lives in Minden! Kevin, what's an engine like that worth? I mostly deal with newer stuff, dirtbikes, atv's, etc...this is a project boat I just picked up for $100 with a good trailer, Minn Kota trolling motor, etc, from a guy at work...Just trying to nail this engine down, it supposedly runs but I'm not quite that deep into the project yet of dumping gas into it and pulling the rope...Thanks for the welcome's you guys, looking forward to talk too you more and I'll try to get pics. posted asap so we can figure out what this little beast is Thanks again!

So Partsman, are you saying that you think my engine may be a S4G-D4G? Can only find one on Ebay and it's just a manual but it resembles the shape from the picture I can see...Thanks Candy, yes it's alot of fun here, "The Good Life"...

Now I'm even wondering how old the trolling motor is that came with this thing! It's a Minn Kota 395 with 36 lbs. thrust and it's a 5 speed...it's heavy but in great condition...

Hi & welcome. Is your Champion A 1 or 2 cylinder? Does it have a sheave on top that you would wrap a rope in or is it a later one with a recoil starter. I used one of the early 1 cyl. ones that you wrap the rope on for many years.I believe they were only rated @ 1 1/2 HP, but worked fine for trolling on lakes. I still have several of them down in the barn.If I remember correctly, the fuel mixture was 16:1. From what I was able to find out several years ago, fuel should not be mixed to much leaner on oil even with modern 50:1 oils due to bearing type.I think I went 24:1,but was afraid to go any leaner. Pic's of your engine would help.

It's a 1 cylinder...It has the starter that you physically wrap the rope around...I'll get some pics. of it today so you guys can check it out...It wasn't winterized evidently, the lower unit oil looks more like black grease than 80/90 weight so I'm just trying to get the fluids freshened up and hopefully it'll run again, I just think it's neat because it's old...I'm praying that I can get it to run...Thanks for the information!

OK! Figured it out OFFICIALLY! What I have is a 1946 Scott-Atwater Firestone 3.5 or 3.6 engine...I have done a TON of homework here and I'm positive...I will still post pics, it's in pretty good shape...Thanks again!
