Photo Hercules ? 1 3/4hp help and info

Hello I have a Engine which I belive to be a Hercules. It is a 1 3/4S HP, 600 Rpm is what it says on the brass tag. The serial # is 865654. If anyone can tell me the year that would be great. It has spoked flywheels. And If I am even right on the brand thanks. Hopefully the picture worked.

I am guessing that the serial# starts with a 3 and not an 8, if that is the case it's a 1928 model. There should be a casting date somwhere on base of the engine along the cylinder like 11-12-28 or something like that. Glenn Karch can clear up the rest. More than likely it's a Hercules because of the splash guard.

Your engine has the squared off hopper that Hercules installed on engines they built for other companies. If the current color is similar to the original, then it's probably a Jaeger. Jaeger built cement mixers and purchased some of their engines from Hercules.

At that serial number, all brands of Hercules built engines used the same block. Being rated at 1 3/4 HP, that rules out Jaeger and ARCO which were rated at 2 HP. That leaves Hercules and Economy. A crank guard indicates Hercules. In 1928 Sears started selling the XK rather than the S model engines. Look for a casting date above the spark plug on the block or sometimes it will be on the opposite side of the block. That is the casting date - not when the engine was completed which could have come several months later.

The date I found on the block were 3-15-28. Another # I also found a PAT date of OCT 30 1923. When I stripped the block, head and Flywheels today I found quite a bite of red paint under the blue paint. Which is leading me to belive it is a Economy. But still not shure.

Econ's did not have a splashguard unless it got by somebody in the factory. also Glenn mentioned earlier that Sears started selling a different style in 28.

Rex do you know if a Economy have the holes in the back for a splash guard like a Hercules. Could of somebody put it on later or maby it was a option? Or if used indoors maby the splash guard was a option.

Rex, I came across the answer I think. All parts were completely stripped to bare metal today. Under all the blue paint was red paint except when it came to the splash guard. It was painted black but under the black was the answer. It was green like a Hercules. Also at the hopper by where the decal goes was a very very faded decal which looked to be the size of a Ecomony decal. Not round like a Hercules. So it looks to be a Economy engine that for some reason someone bolted a Hercules splash guard on for one reason or another through the years. So thank you for your help and everyone elses I think it is solved.

Economy engines normally did not have holes in the back for a crank guard. A crank guard is never listed as an option in the Economy literature for the E through S models. However, an enterpising person could drill and tap holes and add a Herc guard.

Here's my 1 3/4 S. I call it a Herc, but it's an Economy.
