Default 4hp. mogul, Help needed.

I am putting together a 4hp mogul that has been apart for many years so some parts have been lost. I have found most of them but I have had to make some of them. what I am having trouble with is the trip rod that goes from the mag to the igniter. if I understand this right it trips the igniter when the mag trip finger comes back after triping the mag and goes past center a little to trip the igniter, my trouble is I can not get it to trip the igniter at the same point every time IS THIS ROD SPRING LOADED OR SOMETHING????
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
Corky.

Well... I am No IHC expert but I do have a couple. No the rod is not spring loaded. But as near as I can tell it must slide on one end or the other. The early ones slide on the end by the igniter as the rod passes through the igniter arm. After the mag trips and the armature rebounds the slack will be taken up and the igniter will snap open.... The adjustment of this rod is critical as the points have to break when voltage is at the highest point... I can take some pics of the rod on my 6 HP if it would help... It is an early one being the 14th hopper cooled one built....

There are 2 types of trip rods on the SS Moguls.older 1 looks like a long bolt and the newer 1 looks like a candy cane. They both work the same way. There is no spring. When the mag is at rest the rod should have the points open. When the mag is cocked it allows the points to close. When the mag trips and goes back to center it breaks the points at the same time the mag makes juice. The points need to break at the point where you get the most spark. If you ecc strap is the older type with the bevel headed pin for tripping the mag I suppose it work inconsistantly if something is worn.Maybe something needs a good oiling? The mags don't always come to rest at exactly the same spot.Try changing the length of the rod.Rob

Yup mine is the long bolt type. It seems to run best with about 1/16 or so clearance between the igniter arm and the head. I was wondering if Corky didn't make a rod that would not slide on one end. That would definately mess things up...

This is the only good picture I could find quickly. This one would be the candy cane type

Thanks so much for the info on the Mogul trip rod I think mine must be the early type because the igniter end or the piece that slips over the moveable arm of the igniter has a hole that I am guessing a rod must go through.
Thanks Corky.

Hi Corky,

Try Denny Puck (I think he lives in Iowa). This guy makes several parts
for the moguls. Last e-mail address I have for him is denpuck@aol.com.
If this doesn't work I do have his phone no.
