Question 1 1/2 HP Fairbanks Morse

The 1 1/2 HP Fairbanks Morse Light plant engine, that a friend of mine and I have been working on, ran today for the first time in many years. What is the best way to slow it down? There is not speed ajustments. Would retarding the timing help? It just runs too fast. The man that my friend restored it for wants to run an ice cream maker, but I think it runs too fast for that. I know the speed can be slowed down but different pulleys, but we want the engine to slow down. Thank you for any help!
