Default Stover 4 hp.

Hi, this is my first post. I have a Stover 4 hp. that my grandpa gave me. He restored it about 20 years ago but it hasn't run since. My main problem right now is that there is no magneto. My grandpa said he used to run a coil and battery but can't remember(he's 83 now). Can any of you guys give me some tips for setting up something to get spark. After I get it running i'll try and find the correct mag. for it. Thank's.

Go to the Home page on this site, look under References and Harry's Old Engine Site, than under Ignitions. This has a thorough description and diagram of how to wire a battery/coil system to your igniter. You need to use a low tension coil for an igniter system.

Jake you can use a auto. coil by just using the positive and neg. posts. (not the high tension lead.)BobRR

Thanks for the help. After I cleaned up the pump and carb. I wound a coil on my lathe. Then I adj. the spark timing a little and fired it up. I ran pritty good last night, but i'll have to play with the spark timing and air/fuel mix. a little to get it just right. Damn was that cool watching it run, I think my hobby just opened up some. The only problem I found was that it wanted to kick out a little too soon. I had to keep the throttle at least half way so it didn't catch the push rod. I think some of it is from slop in the linkage but is this normal? I don't know much about engine's like this.
