Default 10hp St. Mary Oil Engine

Hello - was wondering if anyone on here has had any experience with a 10hp St. Mary Hvid oil engine. From Wendell's book I get the impression this is one heavy engine for its size. He also indicates it would be a really fun engine to try to start. But that all sounds like fun to me - and it weighs considerably less than my 20hp FM model Y.

Thanks for any info!
Jason

I'm already a bit of a compression ignition engine nut...

20hp Fairbanks Morse Y
12hp Atlas Polar hot bulb
8hp Lister Blackstone

It's sad, but I'm actually losing interest in anything with a sparkplug... Anyone can fire an explosive mixture with a 20,000 volt spark. It's got to at least have an ignitor....

Hi Jason,

Here are some pics of a 8HP Boos oil engine that I still need to get out of the woods.

Here is a link to a web site so you can fulfill your need for Hvid.

Yep Bill - I already found that one. Great site! In fact, it was the first place I've had the oportunity to see diagrams of how hvids work and get the idea. For some reason Murph's description while the 2 of you took turns cranking that Parmaco just didn't sink in. I saw all the Coolspring Hvids with your name on the copyrights in that photo album on there, too.

Jason

PS - I'm the guy that occasionally has the gas turbine at Coolspring from GA.

Hey Jason!

I always say, "If you're gonna go, go big." I like the big hvids. The 10HP will be pretty massive and pretty neat. Don't worry about hard starting. A hvid engine in good condition is an easy start especially a bigger one. Of course you could always use the radial as a pony motor, heh. I expect to see it in Coolspring this year. Hmmm, maybe we can set up a tug-o-war between it and my 12HP Renfrew. I'm affraid the St. Marys might win.
