Smile Ottawa engine - help make it run?

Ive just found a old ottawa 2 1/2 hp engine. It seems to be all intact and turns freely. It was in a barn out of the weather. It has a webster tri-polar oscillator. Can anyone tell me how to try and start this engine? How do I tell if the webster is firing? If not ,can it be fixed? Any information would be a BIG help.

In the Gas Engine Magazine (GEM) you can probably find a manual for your engine. This will answer lots of your questions.

Make sure every thing is free and well oiled. Timing looks good . Webster mag trips at around top dead center

Spray some starting fluid in carb and try to start engine to see if it will fire.
If it dose not fire it is probably the Mag.

You can check High tension mags by holding the wire next to the engine and look you a spark when mag trips.

I check mags with an old timing light. When the Webster trips the light will light.

Usually, the gas check value is stuck on engines that have set idle for a long time. You can check this by putting gas in the tank chocking the carb and see if gas will run out of carb. If gas runs out gas check is not stuck.

Good Luck. This is the fun part od old engines
