Default 25 HP Mogul help

I am restoring a 25 HP Mogul and I was fitting up the cam shaft assembly, governor shaft and magneto bracket to make sure everything fit properly. Here is my puzzle, the mag bracket (4058T)when placed into position does not allow the bevel gear (268T) and pinion (241T) to mesh properly; in fact, they're at least an inch apart! It appears the mag bracket is too short or the bevel gear is not original and has been replaced with a smaller one. That can't be correct though because the bevel gear, if it were larger in diameter would interfere with the cam roller guide casting (4013TB). The governor pinion gear (241T also) meshes just fine. I am fortunate to have the original parts manual for the engine which I have been able to cross reference the physical parts with what is supposed to be on the engine according to the manual. The only thing that doesn't add up is the manual lists the bevel gear as a 268TA and the part plainly says 268T although, again, a larger diameter gear wouldn't fit. Quite the puzzler. Does anyone have any simple solutions? I am fairly confident all the parts I have are for the this particular engine. I can modify the mag bracket assembly and make it work but the more I think about it the more vexed I am. Any help would be appreciated.

Martin

Wow Martin, what an engine!
Well obviously something has to be wrong. I'm not at all familiar with this engine. If you could possibly post a photo and or scan the parts breakdown from your manual, perhaps that would help. I'd love to help you get to the bottom of this. Is there a story to go with this engine? Kevin

Martin: Not familiar with a 25-GOLLY THAT's A BIG ONE. Could it be missing a 1" spacer?

Paul and Kevin,

I'll take some photos this weekend and post them. Concerning the mag bracket; it was the only assembly that I was not going to take apart because it appeared to be in good shape and all there! I realize it's difficult figuring out a problem without seeing it so I'll get some photos soon. I plan on having the engine at the Berryville show in VA at the end of July. Thanks for the interest.

If it would help, the Wisconsin Historical Society may have the parts drawings for these parts (I believe the same engine, essentially, was used first in a tractor application)

No Martin, everything is fine. You will find a cast iron spacer between the bevel gear and mag bracket housing. Throw it away and everything will line up. We ran into the same thing with the 45 Mogul. You might even have to cut the shaft off and redrill the hole...it has been a while so I don't remember what we did....but that spacer is still lying around here somewhere~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Craig,

It's worse than what you think. I guess there are two axis you need to have lined up when dealing with bevel gearing: I'll call them X and Y. The X direction I will designate parallel to the camshaft and the Y axis is parallel to the cylinder bore or push rods. The mag bracket looks like it lines up in the X axis but is over an inch away in the Y direction. There is a Z direction as well but it looks OK. This is the big puzzle; I was going to modify the cast iron spacer you referenced which I have to get a better mesh with the pinions you supplied but the gears aren't even close. I'm going to put everything together again to make sure i didn't bonehead something.

I emailed you. Something is amiss...
As I read it you are saying the mag bracket mounts on the SIDE of the crankcase verses, in our case, the rear.
In the attached pic, the mag. bracket mounts near the corner and the lifter ass'y mounts near the center, over a cylinder.
Maybe you have something entirely different....
