Question IDEAL enclosed crank oil sump question

I have a 3 hp Ideal vertical with an enclosed crank. My question is " Does the sump have to be full of oil (to the top plug) before running the engine?

John,
I've been told as long as the lower rod bolt is dipping in the oil that is enough. Don't know for sure myself. Have it torn apart for cleaning/painting right now but will need to know pretty soon.
Dave.

John,
The owners manual for the model M vertical says to keep the oil level so that the rod dips slightly into the oil at the bottom of the stroke. My model M has two small pipe plugs in the side of the sump and if the oil level is kept between them it's right. I'm also looking for a mixer for my model M 3hp if anyone can help please email. Thanks, Mark.
