Default Gilson Valve Help

Doing valves on a 1 3/4 hp Gilson Johnny-on-the-Spot hopper cooled engine.
Existing intake valve is 4 1/4" overall & extends 3/4" above guide with valve closed. With keeper & pin installed valve will open only about 1/16". My options are to make a new valve or trim height of valve guide. New valve preferred but what overall length?
The exhaust valve is 5 1/4" O.A. & extends 1 3/4" above guide with valve closed. This appears to be close to correct length. It appears from photos posted on Denis Rouleau's site http://www12.brinkster.com/buzzcoil/page101.html that valves should be different lengths.
I'd like to know original dimensions for intake & exhaust valves and just how much intake valve should open before keeper hits the guide.
Thanks Harry
