Default Hercules NXB

A friend of mine is rebuilding his Hercules NXB and is curious as to what year it was built. The Serial No. is 420265. Thanks for your help.

I have 2 NXB engines. One has a 1948 casting date on the bottom edge of the block.

That is half ox the IX series. Remember also they were in John Deere model L tractors in the mid to late 1930's. I used to have Hercules serial number and build dates but lost that information when the basement flooded.

Just for a rough bracketing the Herc N's don't show in a fairly comprehensive 1936 catalog (has a limited Deere section but a good Herc section), but do show in a 38 Victor Herc section, altho that catalog doesn't list any Deere Model L or Herc engined Deere tractor model, and the sole use listed is John Deere (such listings are often incomplete).
A 52 McCord catalog lists the "L" 1939-40 with the NXB and a model "TY", no years listed, with the NXB; while I haven't researched Deere I would assume they began with the NXA 3x4 and went to the NXB 31/4x4???
There's also a mention of an NXPU, which I would assume would be a free-standing power unit.
