Default John Deere E103R

I have a Hit & Miss engine I am going to get running and know very little about these engines. It was made in 1944 and most parts are still on it. I see the piston has been brazed up, which I will replace and I can move the crankshaft up and down their is shims I can take out how much clearance should their be? I can plasagage this to get right. Also how do you time one of these? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
