1902 Rhoades Drill Press Columbus Ohio

I wanted to share this drill press I recently purchased and waiting to bring home. I have been searching for an early mid to late 1800’s drill press and although this one comes in a few years short I had to have it. The make is a Rhoades built in Columbus Ohio 1902. (Thank you to my friend Jake in California for help in dating this machine). This would be considered a “sensitive” drill press and has a unique friction drive . Weights on chains run down the center of the column to help balance the weight of the table to make raising the table easier. A foot pedal is linked to a belt shifter so the operator can start and stop the drill with his feet. This drill will be displayed in my lineshaft museum... I am still searching for an earlier drill press as well if anyone happens upon one.
