25HP Superior

Near my house, there is a 25HP Superior located in an old grist mill that is actually water-powered but had the engine as backup power. This mill and it's surrounding the property are now part of a museum complex. My son and I now have permission to try and restore this engine which is a static display into a running display. This will be an interesting project and will entail considerable work. This engine was originally hot tube fired using natural gas from a well on site. This well was long ago sealed off and we would like to fire this with a Wico OC magneto and use propane. I have a magneto that I will donate to the museum but I don't have the bar with a roller that operates the magneto. I'm wondering if anyone on this site knows of one for sale or if none are for sale could someone give me detailed photos and dimensions so that I could fabricate one! Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 25HP superior

Larry, sounds like a worthwhile project. I bought several of the trips from a vendor at Portland a few years ago. I can't remember who at the moment. Maybe my buddy can remember. I am out of town for a few days but will send measurements when I return. They seem simple to make.

Re: 25HP superior

My Dad has a 20 HP Superior with probably that type Mag on it.
I'll take a picture of it. As I recall it doesn't have points in it. I wish I knew how it works without points!

Re: 25HP superior

Chevy - I have the mag and know how it works. What I don't have is the bar that fits in the back of the mag that trips the mag by way of a roller on the end of the bar. What I need is good pictures and dimensions of the bar and roller. The external dimension I can figure out because it runs in a slot in the back of the mag. Its the length of the bar and the details of the bar and roller I need. Thanks

Plenty of the mags around but very few trips. Nothing holds the trip in place and I guess when the mags are unbolted they just fall out and are left where they lay. Also a lot of them are wore out.

Chevy,
If you're referring to a Wico OC mag, they do have points. I just took one apart recently. They look like a jumbo Wico EK inside.

Also, don't the Superiors use an R1 mag, or did it vary?

con-rad did the OC mag have the trip bar in it when you took it apart? If so do you still have it an could give me some pictures and dimensions??

No, as mentioned above they fall out when un-bolted from the engine. I can measure mine next week, i don't know how universal they are though. Mine is on a two stroke Superior CA, and it has an adjustment bolt to fine tune the length of the square rod. I'll take some pics and dimensions for you. should be easy to make with simple shop tools.

If the hot tube is still there, there is no reason you cant run it on propane. The engine will not care about the heat source for the hot tube. NOTE - if you run the engine on propane, it will develope more power, as propane has more BTUs per therm than NG from the ground. If you run on propane, you will need an accumulator to build a low pressure reservoir for gas supply. You won't be able to run just off the bottle!

Andrew - yes I'm aware of the accumulator. We have a 20HP Reid and we made an accumulator from a piece of 6" plastic Pipe about 4' long and it runs very nice on that.

Okay, It has been a crazy week, but I finally got a few minutes in the shop. The body of the trip is 5/8" x 5/8" square 4" long. Actual measure is .950.
The roller dia is .925 and is .362 thick. The roller pin is 5/16" looks like a pressed fit, one end seems peened. The slot for the roller is .800 deep and is .368 wide.
The bolt is 1.3125 overall with a thread length of 1" It is 5/16 X 18 TPI. The nut thickness is .195.
The threaded hole depth is 1.155.
I hope this info helps. Keep us updated on your progress. The 25 Superiors are great running engines.

Dwayne - This is exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate your help and time and great effort to help me out. We have an appointment set up to get started at this project June 6. We are pulling the head and valve chests. It will need new valves made and probably valve guides. The mice have taken up residence inside the head water passages because the bottom water pipe on the head had been removed at one time. we will also pull the piston to check out the rings and ring groove situation. This will be a great project but will not happen over night. Thanks again for the help.

Larry, you are welcome. Glad I could help. I help when I can, as I have received so much help on this forum. Sometimes it takes me a while to get the information and it never hurts to prod me a little as I tend to procrastinate. Good luck with your project.
