Ok I am fishing for ideas here as my dads truck has a issue.I think serious.
It started skipping and I plugged the little scanner I have into it and it said random missfire, missfire on 3 and 7.
Well I changed those plugs and no change in running.
There is something rattleing in the y pipe.
It has hardly no power at all and moans very load from under the hood.
There is no engine rattle,only the rattling loose thing in the y pipe. The plugs looked fine.
I have not done anything else but will be working on it to see what is wrong.He needs to know if he needs to get another truck or if we can fix this 1.
I have questions but mostly need ideas as to what to check.
I am curious as the moaning would indicate compresion going into the air intake?
So a injector or intake valve could have broke or dropped?
It has a timeing chain I would think instead of a belt right?

Lack of power and rattle in exhaust makes me suspect cat converter came apart. Drop exhaust at manifold flanges by loosening bolts half way and letting it fall and see of it has power then.

Ok that is a cheap test to do for sure.And it is a high mileage truck.
He has been looking around for a newer 1 and was going to pass this 1 along to me at a later time.But it aint looking to good right now.

You should be able to remove the upstream O2 sensors, this will give enough relief to test, an 18MM compression gauge hose will screw in if you want to check back pressure, under 2lb at 2000rpm.

From the symptoms you've given I'd check your plug WIRES, and maybe add a can of injector cleaner to tank. Beyond that I'd maybe do a compression test. Don't know about your rattle. But it might be unrelated to misfires.

I'd go with the cat converter idea first. It's not unknown for them to plug-up.

I've seen Y pipes collapse internally where the two pipes come together causing a nasty restriction.

As posted, take the pipes off at the Y and have a look see and run it without the cat and the rest of the system.

As it's a 98, I'll assume it has fuel injection which will rule out the following. File this away in your brain should you work on older Dodges.

On carbed 318/360's there was a problem whereas the exhaust passage in the intake manifold between banks will clog with carbon. This inhibits the manifold from heating and actuating the automatic choke netting a choke that rarely opens. This over rich situation will fry a catalytic in short order.

Thanks, naturaly when the truck messed up he and I both assumed the worst.
So I will take these ideas and after I get back from a funeral today I will get started checking. It is fuel injected

That engine has a bolt on plate on the bottom of the intake that requires a gasket. They were known to blow out. Disconnect the PCV and block it and the vent hole. Put a vacuum guage on the dipstick tube. If it shows vacuum, the gasket is leaking.

Thanks for the advice. I didnt make it in the shop today. Funeral, cruise in this evening to go to. Since my recent episode I decided I better slow down when I dont feel well so I did.
I will get to this tommorow.
I am thinking the cat is a good place to start as I have delt with similar cases on other vehicals and this 1 is showing the same signs they did.
I hope it is that simple.WIth all the junk broke around here and the yard work that needs doing, I dont need another project!:eek:

Well I had time to work on it this morning.
I first cranked it up and it ran "ok" while it was cold. .But I went ahead and took the pipes loose some and it ran better. I put it all back and was going to park it outside and it was running "ok". I took it down the road a mile or so at normal speed but it started it's sagging and moaning again. By the time I got turned around 2 miles down the road it was 20mph and I was wondering if I was going to have to go get my chevy to pull it home.:eek:
Anyhow it got so weak it barely made it in the shop and shut off it's self. I got it restarted, and moved it forward. I jacked it up and took the pipes loose again and tried it and it ran fine,minus the created exhaust leaks of course.
and STINKS like eggs. Which from what I understand is a key thing with cats clogged up.
So I think you fellows steered me in the right direction and I appreciate it. I found a cat and y pipe combo on ebay for 199. I think we might go that route and fix it here at home. Seems easy enough.

It it smells bad, it's probably running too rich, and will quickly melt another cat.

^ It's time to check sensors and other things to determine why it's running so rich and causes the sulphur smell and cat overheating. If you ran it at night you likely would see that the cat is glowing red.

Well thanks for the help but I am kinda getting stumped.It passed emissions about 2 months ago.
The 4 plugs I pulled from the drivers side were white and clean and had about 3000 miles on them.
Now here is what I forgot to mention.
I had put the truck in the shop yesterday about 9 am.I turned the key on to run down the window and in a hurry I forgot to turn the key off.:eek: I found the battery to be low this morning.So I charged it some before I started.I did smell fuel when I first tried to start it.
Could this have caused the smell in the exhaust?
Judging from what I am reading else where,oil usage,short trips and age could be the culprit. 265,000 miles and it does use a little oil.
No codes other than the miss fire codes i detected when i started the troubleshooting.

I had a 99 with the 360 and had the same thing happen. Lost power to the point it wouldn't go any more and started to overheat. Let it sit a while and was able to start it and got home the last couple miles. Dropped a pipe from manifold to test for plugged converter and it ran great but loud of course. I had to drive it to work the next day, no time to hunt up parts and spend money. Removed pipe, cut the converter open with abrasive wheel, removed the collapsed and plugged contents, and welded it back up. Sold the contents to a scrapper friend for cash! Come to think of it, it did have a rattle leading up to this incident that I assumed was just a heat shield or something, rattle was gone after fix.
Another time it instantly started to miss going down the road, I limped it home 40 miles. Assumed it was computer or injector problem and took it to a shop. They thought the same at first but couldn't find a problem. Turned out to be just a broken intake valve spring. I can't believe I got home without it dropping the valve / kaput!

It is going to smell rich with cats loose, and rotten if they are plugged. I think you found it with the cat.

Ok, thanks!
He and I both are optimistic that this will fix it.The muffler is a slide on fit with clamp. The parts on Ebay bolt on and I can get to the 4 bolts on the manifold and they are not rusty.The only glitch I see in replaceing the parts is the wire connector for the upstream o2 sensor. The connector seems to be on the top of the transmission and hard to get to.Cant find or feel it yet but didnt try real hard this evening as my back was letting me know it was time to quit before i really started to hurt.
This is the part I think will work as a replacement.

If the wire is long on the O2 sensor just wind it up as you unscrew it, unwind it when you install it. If you're getting the rotten egg smell one section of the convertor is still working, they are usually dual bed. If it's plugged vacuum will drop, map sensor will call for rich.

Well, it is fixed.:) Thanks for the help and advice.
No rich smells, no rattles and the truck runs good.
There was some grey powder came out of the convertor when I turned it up on it front end and bounced it.
It was a pain the @-- to get the old 1 out and new 1 in but it was cheaper than having it done elsewhere.
