The diesel locomotive is used for dynamic braking. Dynamic braking uses the electric traction motors as generators to slow down the train.

There is also a rumor that the FRA also has a mandate that a diesel be present for it's air compressors for the air brakes. They are not to rely solely on the steam locomotives air compressors.

These steam engines are old. The diesel can be used to help on the long up grades to minimize wear on the steam locomotives mechanical parts.

I can only imagine the monumental task of linking both sides of the nation with rail. I'm sure at first it seemed inpossible. There were probably places where 2 miles of track took as long to finish as 50 miles elsewhere. All of this gave birth to towns springing up along the rail line. Goods being made available that would have taken months to get to a destination. Factories and mills now had acess to market goods nation wide. I'm sure it was a fantastic time to be alive and observe.

Promontory is where the tracks met, but later they built a short cut across the Great Salt Lake. Where is Promontory from Ogden? I think they removed the tracks after they made the short cut in '42.

Promontory is far north of Ogden. Look at North tip of Great Salt Lake, where tracks could go around lake. Closer to Tremonton on northern boarder.

They are now squabbling about pulling causeway (shortcut) out because the instsllation changed the salinity in the Northern part of the lake. It actually created some very productive wetland marsh areas. Removing causeway would now destroy major bird refuge areas.

From my perspective the causeway was and is a good thing. But the environmentalists take offense to anything that isn't 100% "natural". The only thing that lives in the lake otherwise is brine shrinp. Seems really stupid to destroy productive wetland just because it was a side effect of something man made.

Has been decades since I visited the lake. (Locals NEVER visit lake, only tourists.) As I recall the causeway paralelled the road out to Antelope island and then continued across the lake. So east end around Clearfield (latitude about same as south end Hill AFB. Only drove the west side of lake once. Have no memory of where tracks crossed. But I do recall they passed just north of Wendover at state line. So could probably draw a line from Clearfield to just north of Wendover.

Update: I just recalled that a set of tracks runs around south end of lake, next to I-80 most the wsy to Wendover. Don't think causeway has been used for years. So main East West line has now shifted from top of lake (in Golden Spike days)
To middle of lake (causeway era) down to bottom of lake (? - present)
