Hi Wayne i knew you would know, :wave:yes it is a Coluson about two tonnes of it we dug it out to day it has 54" flywheels and 9' bore some missing parts but surprisingly from the out side it looks restorable, is the timms coulson a portable or stationary ?
SHORT SLEEVES and BRITCHES!!!! I dont even want to know what the temp and weather is doing there.:D Thats an awesome find and recovery too very nice. Thanks for taking the time and care to do it.:wave:

Hi Joe,

Here are some photos. One is of a complete Coulson transport, the transport is for a smaller engine. I think the wheels you will be looking for are more of the style of photos 2 and 3.

Photo 2 is the front wheel from my brothers engine. Photos 3 are wheels which have been retrofitted to a steam portable.

The last photo is of an engine a friend is restoring. Your will note the original paint, this is the third engine I have seen with this colour scheme.

Hi wayne thanks for those pics , patrick sent some black& white pics of some portables as well .Do you have a spare set of wheels in your back shed,:brows: what size bore dose your brothers engine have , you know it is interesting that the part of this engine that has been exposed to the weather all these years is fairly pitted but the buried part is in better condition generally , the rocker arms came free by hand and are now moving freely.

Next time I am over will measure the bore size for you.

I have an engine which was completely buried and the mechanical parts are in really good condition. In fact had suffered less damage than what an engine left outside would have received.

Hi Joe,

Sorry I had planned to post back sooner but I have been busy.

I managed to measure the bore with a metric tape measure, allowing for the ring lead in, it is about 230mm.

I don't have a spare set of Coulson wheels but if you really get stuck I have the set below which are close in size and design.

i have made some progress with the Coulson , i have had the crank out and it,s back in now ,the flywheels run nice and true, but it is interesting that the flywheels don't line up on the crank they are about 4" out of sink and i had to pull the crank out to get the main bearing off on the side shaft side because of the slinger ring was put on over the bearing and screwed to the crank interesting practices back then
The piston is still were i found it ,stuck:confused:

Hi all it is all most two years since i picked up the engine , but to day was the day i got the piston out :brows:
after lots of soaking and elbow grease it is finely out ,the bore looks ok although it had been in the creek for all those years , water had not got past the piston:eek:
the piston is 9" dia

good stuff Joe when we started digging it out i did not think that the bore would ok but the engine angels must have been with us when we dug it out ...

You would only need to leave that shaft out in the open here for a couple days and it would look as if it was original. The salt air here will rust out plastic buckets.

Thanks Patrick but it still has along way to go , i need to make some pattens and get some castings done .
Yes it needs to rust a little but that will happen over time as it is not sheded , we are luck that it is a dry climate here and rust is not to bad, cast iron is not affected mostly it is usually the steel that rusts .
But being upside in a creek bed for 90 years or so didn't help this engine either.

I got the oiler finished and mounted , there was some of the original studs left so i welded nut to them to get them out, it took a bit of time to get the oiler to work right .
A lot this engine looks like it was copied from the early Crossley engines ,the flywheels are the same and the governor and oiler are similar , Wayne Grenning governor drawing are very helpful , thanks Wayne .
