Case 18-32 K Project

Some years ago there was a late 18-32 on a farm auction near here, i remember it had L Case looking wheels on it so it had to be late 1928 i assume. I was the runner up bidder, always thought i might end up with one someday. A friend called a little over a week ago and wanted to sell me this one, terms and conditions were very reasonable. Picked it up last friday on the long weekend.
This one will actually have to wait its turn until after a few other projects, but everyone except my wife thought it would be good to get it in the schedule.:D
This one spent its working life in Wyoming, then went to South Dakota, finally here to Kansas.

Even though it will be on the backburner, i had to check out for any damage or parts needed. I already knew that the manifold was welded and ready by a previous owner, and the head was done. For some reason a piston was broken on top, possibly from trying to loosten up the engine. It looks to me like they had it loose at one time and now its stuck again, the broken piston being at the bottom of its stroke. Strangely, the oil pan looks like it hadn't been removed since it was in use. Seems like they were trying to loosten up the engine all at once instead of one piston at a time. AND, it looks to me like the #3 piston should have been the worst stuck, #4 piston being the one beat and broken.:shrug:

I removed the oil pan saturday, and was lowering it down with my sons' help. As it came down he said; "wonder what that is in there?" Found a governor weight piece that had been laying in there awhile, and after further investigation found another piece up higher in the block. Pulled the governor cover off and found that someone had replaced the governor weight without looking for the pieces.:bonk: While the cover was off i ran a magnet in the cavity looking for more pieces. Found 2/3rds of a TOOTH.
With all good hope i pulled the timing cover to see if they had also changed a gear when the governor went south. No such luck, the tooth matches up perfectly on the cam gear.
So far, aside from the cam gear it looks like the bearing for the governor/ accesory drive shaft needs replaced and the governor needs buhings badly.

Unforeseen problems, eh? That's what makes it such good fun. Look at it this way, you will probably make some new friends in your search for parts!:D

Yes, actually my friend who sold the tractor has quite a few parts available anyway. We knew it would probably need some things, didn't know how much was neglect, these tractors saw less maintainece towards the end of thier use in many cases.
The pan is very easy to remove, why they didn't go that route first to remove broken parts, second to pull pistons, i'm not sure.:shrug:

Anybody know what to use on the 18-32 for sleeve o-rings? Got the pistons out last weekend, may have to pull some sleeves to clean out the furnishings from the last tennants. Looks like they were carpeting.

Russ, an old mechanic friend had a kit for making his own Orings. He bought it at Detroit Ball Bearing, I believe they're name is Applied now. Be worth lookig into, Jim

The Case sat for awhile in front of the shop, had the sleeves and crank throws greased, a cardboard cutout covering the block and a tarp over it all. Last night I went to start working on getting it ready to go in the shop and sure enough, a rat had built a nest on top of the cardboard and cousin mouse or two had ate through the carboard into the block.:mad: The number four sleeve was out so they managed to pull some insulation out of the water jacket and up onto the top of the block. That done it, plywood this time instead of cardboard, will have to pull the block anyway to clean out the water jacket.

My big question now, I noticed what I think is a freeze crack in the water jacket wall facing into the lifter valley. Has anyone had similar? I was pretty disappointed at first, but after looking it over I think it has never leaked, there is still plenty of oil residue on the wall and no leak trail. The oil pan is clean, no rust. I'm going to pull the block and at least one other sleeve so we can clean and look it over.
Sorry but I had to use a flashlight for a flash, pics are poor but I had a mirror to look it over and im sure its a crack, half moon shaped above the cast-in tube in the bottom of the lifter valley.

As the mice pretty much packed the water jacket up and I needed to pull the sleeves to inspect the inner crack this weekend I pulled the block. I hate it when I pull a sleeve and all that crap falls on the crank and in the crankcase.
I saw a thread here where someone had pulled the block and exposed the crank, its actually pretty easy.
The wood under the gas tank looked like the center piece had been on fire at some time or another. The water pump feels like there is something inside trying to turn it into a grinder, and the fan gears must be in pretty worn shape, another fan set came with it.

I hadn't noticed, all this time this tractor sat in my yard I never noticed that the right rear wheel is bent pretty badly at the spokes. I did see where some of the spokes had been heated at one time with a torch and I saw where some weren't straight but when I moved it to head into the shop it really became noticeable.:eek: More work, i'll have to try and straighten it before it goes in.

Russ, your 18-32 looks like quite the project. Wish I had seen it sooner but too wrapped in my own.
I wish for the time to get involved with a cross motor Case. :) True.

Rain and more rain, this weekend I loaded up the Case and took it to the weld shop where I could try to straighten that wheel, look it over some more. Got the wheel better, not good enough yet but it doesn't scrape the fender when it comes around now. Managed to push it into my shop last night in the rain, did I mention it was raining, a lot? :D
I had a suspicion that the axle was bent, so I took the right side hub cap off and this is what I found. The cap had been cracked and welded on the outside, one half of the pin was still holding the wheel on and as I turned it around to measure the axle end it too fell out. The axle measures 3/16" bent, approximately, from the floor. I think that isn't too bad but ill probably have to make sure it isn't cracked or something? Somewhere in its past this tractor had an accident, a friend suggested maybe it was froze to the ground and forced to move? I don't know.:shrug:
Pretty large axle , I think, to get bent at all. But its a pretty heavily built wheel to be bent also, I think. The cast hub isn't cracked that I can see, nor the cases.
The front mounted tie rods were something that other manufacturers tried in later years, Case could have told you that was a bad idea back in the 20's.:D:D

I hadn't even thought of that, I was thinking of the early letter series Farmall wide front ends. When it comes down to it, I suppose the engineers figured us
farmers would never run into anything in front.:D

I could use some explanation on this toolbox, I was looking it over last night and it doesn't seem like there were any holes in the fender or platform that would line up. Is this the right toolbox for an 18-32?
Also wondered if the two holes in the platform wood mean anything.

Back at it again, thanks to a very good friend I have more parts than progress, hope to change that some this winter. I could tell the belt pulley drive gear was pretty worn through the oil filler hole, finally got the pulley off and the gear cover. We may just have a better set of gears now, time will tell as there is a parts tractor now for disassembly. Also have a better wheel available for the right side. Man, did it get cold just as time freed up.
Some radiator repairs found, two more tubes to seal up.

Russ, as far as your question about the toolbox. Our 25-45 case has exact same one. Mounts on platform.
