Here’s one not too many people know about on the C series Climax governors. It’s common to know some older governor drive gears had two holes in them. A lot of people wonder why. This is why.

The earliest governors were oiled from the bottom by the crankcase pressure. On every bottom dead center the holes in the drive gear lined up with a sleeve that set on the gear. The sleeve was held in place by a large hole in the base of the governor.

On the top of the governor was a breather that let the pressure blow in and along with it some amount of oil.
