Evinrude Elto 4201-01563 outboard 1935?

I recently picked up a really nice original Evinrude Elto outboard from an elderly engine collector I know. He said that the engine last ran about thirty years ago. The engine turns over with compression and spark, so it likely just needs a good cleaning and it will run. The tag on the engine says: Evinrude Motors 4201-01563 with a Canadian patent date of 1935. There are several casting numbers all over the engine, a 194645 on the lower crank seal cover, 101913 on the water jacket, and 194769 on the carburetor. From these numbers can anyone date my engine?

I am also curious as to the engines model, power output, and sale price when new.

It took me two hours to clean the fuel tank. It was so gummed up from dried up fuel that the cap did not want to come off and the line which fed the carburetor was packed solid with varnish. Once I was able to get the cap off, I cleaned the tank with the old hardware and shake method. I typically pour in a handful of star washers, lock washers, nuts, bolts and a pint of gasoline into the tank. After shaking vigorously for five minutes, I rinse the tank out with warm water, and repeat until the tank is clean. Because the fuel line and fuel valve were packed with varnish, I had to use drill bits and a steel wire to break through the crud, so that I could blow the rest out with compressed air. Once clean, I reassembled the fuel system, and ran a few gallons of hot water through the system cleaning it all out once and for all. Unfortunately I found the fuel vent to be clogged, so I had to disassemble the fuel cap and drill out the vent so the tank could breathe, and fuel would run out of the line. After rinsing everything out, I dried the fuel system out with compressed air and let it sit under a heat lamp to prevent surface rust from forming.

With the fuel system clean, it was time to open up the carburetor and see what was going on in there. All in all it was actually pretty clean! The inlet needle and throttle shaft were stuck in place, but they cleaned up easily. I have the carburetor in my ultrasonic cleaner as we speak. Once clean, I will blow out all of the passages with compressed air, and dry under a heat lamp. Because this carburetor utilizes a cork float, I will need to dry out the cork as best that I can, before resealing it with some of Lee Pedersen's gas tank sealant. I typically dry my cork floats out by letting them sit under a 500 watt heat lamp for a couple of hours. It is important to keep the cork at a distance so it does not burn! In a couple of days when the cork is dried and sealed, I will make new gaskets and packing nuts for the carburetor so I can begin assembling it.

So it was only made in 1937, produced 0.9Hp @ 3500rpm, and cost $44 new. Very cool!

The motor was only made for one year because the
Boy Scouts sued Evinrude for using the name Scout.
It's a valuable little motor.
Search Ebay archives for ones that sold.
If Your going to get into the old outboard hobby
You need to get Peter Hunn's book "The Old Outboard Book"
Its one of the best history books on old outboard motors.

Also identical to the Elto Pal.
The Evinrude LongRanger was identical as well except for larger tank, recoil starter & cowling.
While identical in every other way the motors were variously rated from .9HP to 1.1HP.

1 have a 1935 evinrude elco,is there a gas filter on it when i took off the back where the float is the filter look like a screen
