external combustion but not stirling

Has anyone seen an engine like this before? It sucks in hot air from the candle flame and relies on the condensing/cooling to make a vacum in the cylinder. It was in an old 1939 issue of Popular Mechanics.

They are called "flame lickers, flame eaters, vacuum engines, or atmospheric engines". There's probably more names I can't think of right now.
