Just wondered if there were any Gaar-Scott engine owners or fans on here that I didn't know about, would love to chat if there were.

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

I might be an Advance fan, but I like Gaar-Scotts just as well. They were well built engines and easy to run. For a few years, they could claim that they were the largest manufacturer of steam engines in the world (I can't recall the exact dates, but it was just before the turn of the century before Case became really popular) Here are some pics of the oldest known surviving Gaar-Scott that anyone knows about. It's serial number is 1497, it was built circa 1869, and is owned by my Grandfather, Al New of Pendleton, IN. We use it to shred corn every fall at a little show at the Conner Prairie living history museum in Noblesville, IN and it does an excellent job considering it's coming up on it's 140th birthday pretty soon!

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

thats a neat old Garr portable with wooden wheels
mike your engine looks prety nice as well i bet its fun to run.
have either of you heard of Bob Anderson from manitoba here. hes collected a lot of garr stuff. he has a good running 25 single brodrick. and a double brodrick thats fairly complete but not running. Bobs found quite a few good boilers around. when ever someone needs one around this area(Man, nd, sd, minn) he seems to have one. ;) ive been helping my friend kory change over a lap 25 double on a nice brodrick. this was the Ivan Burns engine i think. Will be another year yet before we get the tiger purring :D

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

I am definitly a Gaar Scott Fan. I have been running Roy Sweizer's of Pontiac, IL 25 HP double rear mount at the Pontiac show for the past 6 years. It's a BRUTE and I love it.

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

I know where there is a VERY large G-S boiler laying in a fence line, stripped of course. I have heard it's from a 40 hp, but this could be wrong..
Trying to get my hands on it, I imagine once stripped and after laying outside for so long, they are kaput? This one had no lathe or tin on it and the flues have been cut out, the Case boiler I aquired does have the flues and the lathing. the outside metal is not pitted like the Case boiler, nor for that matter is the inside....

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

Colin, any clue if Bob might have a boiler for an 18 HP? I know someone that might be interested, as they've got an 18 with a shot boiler. You are quite right, that little 13 HP of mine is quite a blast to run. After running the 22 HP for awhile, then getting on the 13 it feels like running a scale model!

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

I thresh with a 1912 25-75 double simple up here in Sask, one of the best engines out there, very good heavy boiler, not a bad lever arangement, atleast nothing to hit your head on like our reeves or rumely, me and another fellow are getting it back in shape, there not the nicest to adjust the wrist pin brass on need a strait handled box end wrench like the one in the sales book!

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

Chad,
When I was 15 yrs old my folks took me on vacation up to Canada, and we went to the show at Saskatoon. I remember seeing that old Gaar, and that was in fact, the first Gaar-Scott I ever laid my eyes on. I'm glad to see it's still under steam and being shown. If I remember right, at the time there were a lot of engines parked out behind the museum that were no longer steamed. Have any of these been worked on and gotten back in condition?

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

Chad, I'd hate to take on that much work with a five man crew, let alone only two people! Is the big American Abell in your picture under steam yet? I think I remember seeing it out back way back when.

I sure hope I can get you to supply me with the numbers off those Case engines (both engine AND boiler numbers) Thanks

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

I have a late 25 double rear mount. My grandfather and great uncles had one new in 1911. Maybe Colin Case has seen the old family photos I gave Kevin Anderson. My familys first steam engine was a used Garr Scott return flue 13 or 16hp.

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

There are no photos of the return flue engine. I haven't posted photos before, when I get some time I will have to learn how. I bought the double at Freeport,IL about three years ago.

Re: Gaar-Scott engine owners?

Bob Anderson liked the photos also. There aren't many photos of fairly new Garr Scott doubles to study to see how they were.
