Once an engibne was converted to run on gas, the steam componants were no longer needed. Cylinders, pistons, running gear and often the boilers were either abandoned or scrapped. many engines were assembled in place - never to be moved again, so pieces were tossed aside, in the weeds. A lot of times, a metal detecter is a good thing to bring along during an engine rescue! You never know what you are going to find!
