Help!!--Stearns Engine Designations D-DR-DU Etc.

Several Stearns engine "series" had the designations A-AR-AU, D-DR-DU etc...(all within each "series" same b/s)...
I've got a Stearns ad which says the "A" version is open flywheel type, no Bell/flywheel housing; that the AU version was with the Bell/flywheel housing for tractors of unit construction. I assume this holds true with the D etc series.
Does anyone here know how the "AR/DR" version differs, or what the "R" designates??

I would like to see a pic of these early style of stearns engines. My Stearns/Gile tractor (missing the engine) shows the manifold on the opposite side as a huber in the tractor book but with the same engine bore and stroke.

1926 that the first new model under the new management would be announced, the Model D series 6-85. Actually the engine from the larger sleeve- valve six, the model S-6-95, which was upgraded in January of 1925, would be updated and retained for the new model, at least for the time being. Engine improvements were on the way, but there had not been enough time to complete them.

That's an excellent link on Stearns. Same Stearns as in the 40-62 Huber? I spent over an hour and learned a bunch on sleeve valve engines which always interest me. We (son) have a Wyllis Knight Sleeve valve car and in my shed. Thanks

JOE: This ad has no date (it's in "Tractor Quondam", a little booklet of reference book copies of tractor models and assorted ads, by AP Lang in 1971).
Illus is of vertical 4cyl ohv, plugs on passenger side in cathedral shaped openings in side of head, plugs look like 45 degree angle, with petcocks just below in block.
Fan is mounted on stalk,driven by flat belt pulley off front of accessory drive on pass side, driving water pump and mag, with what must be round oil press gauge between and just below wp and mag.
Rad hose connec to radiator comes out of center of head in front of engine.
Manifold, carb would be on drivers side.
May have some other Stearns ads with dates; will check
EXPLOR:---nice history, but no cigar---my Stearns was Justus Smith Stearns of Ludington, MI--Stearns Motor M'f'g Co, later Stearns Motor co, which grew out of/descended from Gile Tractor & Engine Co and/or other Gile companies there in Ludington. My Stearns made his money in timber/lumber, then added everything else he stumbled across. He gave up engines in 1930 or so.
OILPULLED: None of the Stearns in tractors are listed as Stearns-Knights, so I doubt any connection, unless in generations prior to engine building.

You are looking for Gile engines of Ford tractor fame made in Ludington, Michigan . Justus Smith Stearns was the money man.

No, I am looking for a pic of the 4 cylinder engine that Gile developed in 1918 and was used in the Gile model Q tractor in 1919 and in 1920 was renamed Stearns tractor and used in the same tractor but now under their new name and later went on to be used in a lot of Hubers after more refinement. The engine is listed in Chilton 1918 book in the tractor engine section as a model P with a 4.75 x 6.5 bore and stroke. By 1921 Stearns calls this motor a model AU.

Joe: Haven't found any earlier ads on the A/AU or any Stearns; when Lang made thisbooklet up he blocked out all the original magazines names/dates, but an Eisemann mag ad in the same book shows "(c)1920"...
Email or PM me an email adds and I'll try emailing a pic; the ad has mostly engine specs you'll probably find interesting.
I've been having trouble with my set sending MB pix instead of GB pix, but if I can't make it work will mail a Xerox copy.

Are you looking for one of the three Stearns super four engines built in 1926 and tested in Nebraska?

The D model was in the middle, called the 20-40 before the test and 32-45 after. Du would mean it had a bell housing for a tractor.

To add information I own a 1924 Bear Crawler made in Boston, Mass and it is powered by a Model AU Stearns 4 Cyl. I believe it is rated as 55 HP which is listed on the Bear tag on the gas tank. ED B

That is the only pre Huber application I could find as well besides the Gile/Stearns tractor. I wish I had a complete set of Chilton books but I am missing 1919 and 1920. I am starting to think since it is just a drawing of the Gile tractor in the book it may be botched up and maybe drawn wrong but on the same token I checked and its not a negative of a pic like in some cases. The drawing in the book has the exhaust coming down on the RH side kind of jammed in by the pulley. If I could verify that the AU was built in 19 or 20 then I would know that I would have the correct engine using one out of a Huber. Anyone know of any WW1 trucks using a Stearns? They had to be selling them to someone??

Sorry to hijack your thread Bud, I looked in my 1918,21,22 and 23 Chiton books and I cant find "R" anyplace.

JOE: No problem, it's all information. As to Stearns in trucks, I haven't seen a singe listing of a Stearns in a truck in any of my old catalogs. However:
(1) that kind of engine would probably be in a heavy specialty model or off-road model, usually not covered by my catalogs...
(2) a number of "assembled" truck builders didn't openly acknowledge "vendor" engines, so, who knows??
This undated ad does say "For 2-3 and 3-4 plow tractors and motor trucks".
ED: this undated A/AU ad lists BHP 40/800 and 45/900, but Stearns traditionally underrated their motors.

Joe: Forgot to mention sites covering heavy road and general const eqpmt, like shovels, cranes, draglines, dredges would be places to look for Stearns info, as they were advertised for those uses in trade magazines, almost always as the engine with lots of extra power.
I know I've seen several in magazines like Roads and Streets, but I think I've sold all the early ones (teens/early 20's).
hcea, the Cat sites, stripmining?, maybe the snowplow site if they were used as the plow engine, altho Climax seemed to be popular on those.
Stearns was reportedly a popular marine engine, probably for working boats (fishing boats, small tugs)rather than sport or racing, like Erd. oldmarineengine and such sites may turn up info. Your EUs marine equivalent seems to be the MEU, which takes the same head gasket as your EU per my 38 Victor--don't confuse with the MEUV, a 6cyl. Good luck.Good luck.

William L. Gile of Gile Boat and Engine Company fame was an inventor, machinist and mechanic. He built heavy duty stationary and marine engines. He was a pioneer in multi- cylinder, large displacement engines.
Their most desirable product was the “Stearns Farm Lighting Plant”. The only part of the company that attracted offers in 1930.

Tractor engines were for builders that needed an off the shelf engine.

William L. Mercereau, the Secretary and Treasurer was responsible for the car ferry at Ludington, Michigan.

The Gile Q 15-35 had a 4 ¾ x 61/2 bore and stroke.

If I could verify that the AU was built in 19 or 20 then I would know that I would have the correct engine using one out of a Huber.

Joe, on page 81 in my 1920 Chilton it tells of the the new AU Tractor Engine for 1920 and how it has more improvements . It shows complete engine and cutaway views. It is a 2 page document. I will try to scan. Also on page 149 Stearns has a full page ad on this engine so I would say you are correct for 1920. My issue is Jan. 1920

My undated A/AU ad has generally larger rod/main bearings and valves (the only specs, beside cam brg sizes, that match those in Joes scans)..
Rod brg size---23/4x31/2...
Front main---27/8x31/2
Center and rear main---27/8x41/2
Cam brg differences vary:
Front cam---2x33/8
Center cam---21/2x33/Rear cam---2x21/4
Valve diameter---21/4 clear opening.
I've emailed smtwins to see if his Chilton one page ad looks the same as my undated one.

Bud, the Ad is totally different. I will scan and post on Monday. There seems to be a bunch of changes in the Stearns engine in a short length of time.

Going by memory because my books are at the shop, my January 1918 Chilton Tractor index lists only one 4 cyl motor a model "P", then the tractor ad from the Febuary 1918 Chilton Tractor Journal calls it "Q". And from Mikes book in 1920 the AU is on the market. Its hard for me to believe they would have reconfigured the entire motor and put the manifold on the RH side for a year so I would guess the tractor pic is messed up? Also interesting is there is a big span of production from 1920 till the first Huber using a Stearns comes out with only the Bear crawler in the middle. I think the Stearns AU was a good motor so you would think you would see it in more places?

Don't count on that Joe.
There is a Plowman tractor at the shop with a Waukesha engine in it. You'd expect that being a Waukesha it would be a standard engine as far as Waukeshas go but it's anything but....... :bonk:
A friend has a comprehensive book with Waukesha specs and not much adds up....... :crazy: ....... :uhoh:
