How many remember Barney Pollard’s collection from Detroit?

I attended one of Barney's sales. Although I didn't buy anything,it was an interesting experience. A goodly number of his cars have been lovingly restored over the years and a few are still squirreled away not far from where they were purchased.
A friend has a restored 1909 EMF that came from Barney's collection.

Yes, that was one of those mystical places you heard about years ago but never believed could exist. I bought a tractor in Michigan some 40 years ago and that fellow had bought stuff from that yard.

I knew Barney Pollard & still have 6 of the 21 cars & trucks I bought directly from him. He was a straight shooter & you knew where you stood with him. Fortunately he & I got along very well - some did not. The story about the cars hanging is a little off. The building with the rail road track iron for rafters was built around a great number of cars already standing on their back ends. The 1915 Maxwell & 1925 DB pictured both came from Pollards - (the DB has 20,000 miles & never was a taxi)

I remember when I was picking up the Autocar in Alberta. My dad and I looked at a few cars that Mr Reynolds had brought back from the Pollard collection. Some had out of the ordinary damage and rust in strange places, bumpers and fender ends rolled up, holes rusted in places that never rust, due to standing on their ends. Neat to see. I’m glad there was guys like Mr Pollard around to save a lot of today’s treasures.

I remember seeing cars on end after the fire.
I ended up with a 2 cylinder REO, a 1 cylinder Cadillac & a 1912 Hudson roadster out of the fire. They are all restored now. The fellow in the picture is B.J. Pollard. These were the first lot of cars stored & the engines were faced down. The later buildings all had the engines facing upward.

There used to be some great places like that around. I suppose there still are. There was a junk yard at Paris Junction, Ontario that was full of neat stuff, including tons of Chrysler flat head 6 engines. Everyone simply called him Benny the Jew, and I think that is what he called himself, so it was not a slur. It is all gone now.
There was another yard near Exeter. The fellow's name was Cudmore. I needed a head for an Erd motor and someone suggested I go there. I think he stopped buying cars about 1960 because there was nothing newer than that. He had some rare early stuff up in the barn. I was told to be careful because he might shoot me. As it turned out, when I told him about some of the tractors I had, we got along fine. It must be all gone now?
There was another yard south of Ayr. No one got much out of there. When the old lad tipped over, they brought in a crusher and cleaned up. With our damp climate, cars went to hell anyway sitting outside. There might have been some older pieces saved.

Jack, did Craven’s get any of the cars? Mr Pollard must have collected from a very large area, did he have any histories of the cars you were able to get? Great bunch of cars by the way, thanks for preserving them.

David, The Craven collection was put together in the early 70s, before Pollards starter selling off the collection. I do not think Craven had any Pollard cars. The Craven collection was sold off in the 80s.
B.J. Pollard was in the road construction business as well as other pursuits. I was told that he would often travel all over the US to quote on road jobs & if he spotted an interesting car on the way he would buy it & have it picked up by one of his trucks returning empty from a project. Some of his cars had his name stamped into the frame to identify it for the driver on pick up.
The only history that he remembered on the cars I bought was that the 2 cylinder REO was practically like new when he stored it, unfortunately it was one of the fire victims. It showed no wear on the mechanical parts though & is now shiny & running the roads in Poland.
