Identify Type of Auger Tool / Handle Assembly?

A wood handle has been added to the upper horizontal bar of this T-shaped tool for added torque. The upper bar inside the wood is 7" long and the tool is 6 3/4" tall. The lower threaded area is 3/4" wide and tapers down 9/16" on the bottom.

If this some type of a tappered boring auger or simply a attachment for bits?

Thanks! My brain drew a blank for some reason. Thats makes sense - first drill a 9/16" diameter hole and then drill this tool into the hole to create internal threads which have a maximum width of 3/4".

Yes, definitely a tap for threading holes into wood.

Usually pretty expensive, too.
