Can't remember exactly, but i think we have owned this tractor for about 8 years. A friend was going to an auction some distance away and told me there was a KTA on steel there, i told him i would sure be interested. He called me during the sale and told me it was stuck, the front wheels were cobbled up, but it had rear steel. I told him to buy it anyway, and when he got it home this is what we found. Actually had 10-20 IH rears and VERY cobbeled up fronts. Fortunately the front outers turned out to be KTA, but this one waited in the weeds for awhile, an Amish conversion i believe.

Re: KTA M&M project

We put diesel fuel in the cylinders over the years, never came loose. I looked for a long time for front cutout hubs and managed to find some last year. As next years' show features M&M i thought i would see just how bad it would be to get it running again.Saturday i started to pull the head, this is what i found at the manifold. Looks like moisture got in the inner two cylinders.

Re: KTA M&M project

Pulled the head off and was surprised, some rust and all the diesel was gone. Two stuck valves, one bad and one not so bad. After some cleanup and a little penetrating oil i tapped on the inner two pistons a little bit and it turned over without much trouble.:)
Looks like so far this will actually be a hone and ring job, drained the oil and found all the diesel fuel.

Re: KTA M&M project

Anyway, i sold my favorite plow tractor several years ago, some of our others are now needing transmission work and etc. A friend of mine had a KTA at a plowing event while i had my 10-20 IH. That KTA was impressive to me, reason i wanted one for some time. For thier size the power seems to be pretty substantial, and an easy unit to haul around. I am planning on pulling off those rears and putting on a pair with lugs until i find correct rears. (if ever:shrug:)
The gas tank looked pretty good until i tapped on a questionable spot. I have a pretty good tank in the shed, but its dented up some awful. May have to repair this one.
Looks like the head gasket is reuseable. The Victor numbers were face down, but this gasket looks to me like it could go either way, wrapped on all edges and copper on both sides.

Re: KTA M&M project

Just imagine it looking like this.:D
Except for this one has "Waterloo" on the radiator. Iv'e been undecided about painting it grey or yellow, its a '38 model if i remember right. Sure found traces of grey paint under the yellow, i think at this time of manufacture they at least had red wheels.

Re: KTA M&M project

I saw that "Waterloo" KTA sell at auction years ago, and saw it again, a few years later restored as pictured above. My KTA is a 1935, and it too had the early Prairie Gold over top of the Grey. I have a hunch that it was the dealers applying the Prairie Gold to the grey tractors as a way to brighten them up while sitting on the lot beside the newer models.

Have 1938 KTA and is grey and no PG. Original wheels. I imagine a MM dealer with a a 38 U and UDLX would paint a KTA PG to make a sale. Not many KTA's were left in 1938.

Re: KTA M&M project

This tractor is kta306294. I just noticed something, on the waterloo and molinegb pictures the front axle wishbone is short and mounted to the pan. Mine is long and mounted to the bell housing.
Mine is 457 tractors from the end of production and 12 tractors into 1938 production.

Here is one i found for sale in PA right now, look at those rear wheels.

Russ, a friend of mine has one, a 37 I believe with the long wishbone, the guy he bought it from said the man he hot it from changed it for pulling something to do with the weight transfer. I seen those wheels on y hat one for sale very nice. If you had original rear hubs I know where there is a set cut offs, probably not that far from you. Jim

Yes, so far i don't have rear hubs but would like to find some. I would be interested in the cutoffs. You know, it seems very hard to find any manuals for these, even in reproduction. If these are orphans that fits very well with my collection.:D

Re: KTA M&M project

Have several manuals on KT and KTA. Think there is 6. Serial numbers in 38 started with 306282 and last was 306751. My 38 is 306636. Would have to check on others to see what axle is on them. There is a 30 KT and a 35.36.37.and another no sn one in boneyard.

About 75 miles. Could be traded for. I could use a pair of Fordson entention rims.
You know, Jerry had a pair of extensions and he can't remember where they went, they sat in his trees for years. I haven't been able to find any, ustabe you couldn't give them away.

That tractor was bought new from the Waterloo MFG Co in Waterloo Ontario by a doctor in that area and then bought second hand by a family in the Milton area.I know the second owners son and he told me he remembers pulling tree stumps out with that tractor when he was younger

Russ, I have one rear hub,but you would have to rivet new spokes to it. The originals are rusted off even with casting. This is available if you want it. Jim

Some years ago we went to out to Rosholt, South Dakota (our sister city) for their Threshing Bee.
A fella at the show had just hauled down a HUGE, all wood, separator, (Minneapolis I believe).
The owner was proud as a Peacock as he should because that thing was in outstanding condition.
Anyway he wanted to thresh with so some younger fella pulled in with in either a KTA or FTA Twin City, KTA I think.
I looked at that thing and thought "No way in hell is that tractor going to pull that separator!"
I was in awe (or as awe as I ever get...... :p ) when the tractor handled it perfectly.
I couldn't believe it and wouldn't have believed had I not witnessed it.

21-32 doesn't compare to KT which oddly never had a rating that I know. Would guess KT as 15-30 rating. Basic KT 3-4 and Ft 4-5 plow. KT has way more snap but not even close on lugging of G/Ft/21-32

I never had one of these apart, didn't even stop by when my friend was doing his. Just a look at the combustion chamber says a lot to me.:brows:

Which head is on KTA? Original was Ke 251c. Most were changed to Ke 251D
which was stamped HC. Many of originals were updated to run gasoline. Compressioon only went up from 5 to 1 to 6 to 1
