Lauson TLH on "Rotohoe 300H"

Hello, I'm new to smokstak. Just got an old self propelled Rotohoe model 300H, serial # 4095 with a Lauson TLH737WT engine, serial #6005405. Wondering the year of manufacture for either tiller or engine. Has good compression, so if I can find some ignition points, I'm sure she'll run. Just has the coil & the plate it mounts on, no points at all. Not sure if the points mount to another plate or directly to main plate. Looks like there would be another small plate for the points, by the spacing of mounting holes on the main plate. Aim to restore this unit when time allows. It's been implied this may be for lawn reconditioning rather than garden tilling. I've never seen one, so have no idea. It has straight blades about 1 1/4" apart, staggered around shaft. Seems more for garden to me. Anyone out there with any info? Thanks in advance.

I believe your engine is a 1956. The attached picture shows both types of magnetos used on the TLH - Wico & Eisemann. The Lauson part numbers for the complete breaker point set are as follow: Wico - 26024. Eisemann - 22645. The Eisemann pic is not as good, but the component layout on both is almost identical. Usually, the points used in your engine would have been used in others as well, since these mags were used on a lot of different engines. From what I can see, the breaker points assy should bolt directly to the coil plate. Is your points cam on the crankshaft? Should be a ring with a keyway inside that slips on the crank and will have a flat spot on the outside to close & open the points.

Mine has the Wico, as there is FW2270 stamped on the mag plate. Are these points still available, & if so, where to get them? Thanks so much for your help.

points might not need replacement just cleaning and realignment. I had a fbm mag with puny spark cleaned the points and realigned gave it a spin and got a nice surprise!

That's just it, there were NO points in it. Someone had taken them out. I've even taken points from different makes, altered them & made them work, but getting the timing just right would be difficult without something to go by.

My 1961 Wico manual shows model FW-2270 part numbers and diagram.
Here are the Wico numbers
contact set X8608
condenser X8959
Stator plate unit X8762
Stator plate Assembly X8664
Coil X8959

The diagram looks like the standard magneto used on the Tecumseh V50, V60 etc with cast iron flywheel.
Go to your local Tecumseh service place and they will likely be able to cross reference to modern Tecumseh numbers. You should have no trouble getting the parts

Thanks, I knew they looked like modern Tec units, but wasn't sure. I have an old 10hp vertical Tec engine laying here, maybe the points will interchange. If not, I'll go to dealer asap.

You sure do get around Joe! :wave: Great site here for sure. Gonna try to get to salvage yard today to pick up an old 8hp Wisconsin like on my Spinaway mower. It has a cracked piston & bad valve, so hoping the one at yard will have what I need. Figure I can also find a Tec engine with the points I need for this Lauson.

Found that Wisconsin at scrapyard. Identical to engine on the "Spinaway" mower. Not stuck & has compression, so may just use this engine on mower. Also found an old BF Onan 16hp twin. About a 1970 model. Looked rough, but got it running in about an hour & a half. Warm, she has just a tad of smoke at decelleration, but none on throttling up. No knocks either. Got both engines for $27 total going by weight. :D

TLH up & running. Carb off to be cleaned, so just running off bursts of spray can carb cleaner. The bore wasn't worn at all! No smoke either. Will get carb cleaned & back on is a day or so.:D
You'd never believe how I rigged up the points off a TVM220 Tec engine, so I'll just hafta take a pic & post it tomorrow. Gotta get out to milk the cows now.

Well when I went to take carb apart, with the best of care, the main jet screw broke off in her! Took a lot of tedious work to drill it out, then make another screw shaft one size larger as threads were damaged a bit. Got it all cleaned & back together. She runs like a champ! Smokes a bit, but after 50yrs I'd expect as much. Governor works great too. She'll sit & idle as well as a new one. Now you let a new one sit for just a couple years & it'll never run again without major money spent. Spent zero dollars to get this one going. That's why I like the old stuff! When I have the engine cover off, I'll take flywheel off & take a pic of my points system & post it.
