Lindsay Portable Air Compressor/Wisconsin AK Engine

I've got an old Wisconsin AK driven, Lindsay portable air compressor I bought back in the mid 80's. I bought it to use with a small sand blaster, for cleaning up small parts & such. Life happened, and it has been sidelined for 20 some years.

I bought a large blasting cabinet, so brought it out of semi-retirement, to help run the cabinet. I plan on hooking it tandem with the 5hp, old shop compressor to make it easier on it.

So now I'm more curious as to exactly what model it is, and what exactly the intake filter material is. Can new be bought, or made from something..?? It appears to be a woven material sandwiched between two perforated cages. I have a picture of it below, along with several pics of the unit.

The engine is a Wisconsin model AK. I did not see a tag with a model number of the compressor on it, just some casting numbers. I found all kinds of info, and manuals for the engine, and mag. which helped get things in order. I cleaned and re-set the points, and oiled the mag. Happy to say I've got a bright blue spark. If I wouldn't have pulled a muscle in the lower back last week helping a buddy load 3 RT tillers in the back of his truck, I'd probably had it running. The MTD tiller wasn't so bad, but the one big Troy-Bilt was a bear..!! That's why it's setting up on saw horses, and plywood, so I can pretty well stand up straight, and work on it. I love my chain hoist, beam & trolley, for jobs like this..!!

None the less, was wondering if someone could identify what model air compressor this is, and rated CFM. And, especially about the air intake filter. It looks like it can be washed out, and reused. It seems years back, the local auto-body paint supply had these filters. Just thought I'd ask here first. I also found the website for Lindsay, but then also read several threads where they didn 't have squat for the older compressors.

Engine is a Wisconsin Model AK Ser.# 689813 Spec#7597-2

Lindsay Ser.#5979 And, found an L9 on it, if that helps identify it.

The rule of thumb for compressors is that 1 electric horsepower = 4 cfm, and 1 engine horsepower = 3 cfm. The Wisconsin AK is a slow speed engine with a maximum governed speed of 2400rpm. If you figure a running speed of 1800rpm, that engine can produce 3.2hp, or roughly 9cfm. At 2400rpm, that engine can produce 4.1hp, or roughly 12cfm. My bet is that it has a maximum capacity of 9cfm, perhaps indicated by "L9" (Lindsay 9CFM?) That is a really neat unit. I would clean it up, get it running and leave it to the side. It would be a shame if it failed for whatever reason. I learned that the hardway with my 1953 US Navy spray gun unit. One of the compressor rings free'ed up after sitting for fifty years and it blew the top ring landing off, and I have been searching for a spare piston since.

I was thinking the same, that it would make 9 CFM. It is a neat little compressor, and still planning on using it. Being I'll only be using 40 psi to blast, so as not to shatter the glass beads so bad, with both compressors running, neither should be over worked.

I checked the oil level in the compressor, and it was full, and the oil still looked new. I'd like to run it a while, then check again, and see if the oil discolors any, and change it out. Any idea what was used in these..?? I'm thinking something like a SAE20 Non-detergent.

The oil in the compressor will not discolor. No carbon or combustion byproducts. HOWEVER - if the oil is more than a year old, I would replace it. Oil oxidizes when exposed to air, and it will varnish over time. Varnish is not good for bearings or rings. Buy a good compressor oil. Do not use engine oil. if you have no choice, use a NON detergent oil.

I have a 1945 Briggs ZZ Lindsay with the same air filters. I would just wash your filter media and re-use it. If it's deteriorating, just replace it with similar material.

I have a Wisconsin/Lindsay unit. It is on a 2 wheel factory cart with a removable pull handle. I don't have a picture site so I can't post pictures but the name plates on the engine and compressor units are nice. I don't think it ever was out in the weather.
The engine plate lists the size as 2 7/8 X 2 3/4.
Oil specs SAE 30 over 40F degrees
SAE 20 5 t0 40F
SAE 10 below 5
Change every 50 hours

Thanks..! I was wondering about the age of the outfit. Of course it doesn't mean they were made the same time. I suppose the war effort made things a little short in supply. I really never dreamed it was that old though.

I did wash the filter material, and let it dry near the shop stove. It cleaned up well, and guess I was more surprise it didn't shrink.

It's going to be in the 60's and 70's towards the end of the week, so may see how it works teamed up with the 5hp electric. May just try it by itself first. I'll only be blasting at 40 psi, to keep from shattering the glass beads. I've got more than several things I want to clean up, and will probably think of a few more, before it's over.

I just bought an 81 lindsay 125 HR that starts and runs great. I have more questions than used for the damn thing. Can someone help with information about it or a specific forum?????
