Massey Harris 744

Hi, Have just acquired a Massey Harris 744 with Perkins P6 engine. I am looking for information regarding servicing the brakes and also looking for an instruction/service manual. I would also be interested in finding out the date of it as this one has some different features to another 744 I have worked on. It is in reasonable condition and the engine runs well although has an occasional small miss on one cylinder.

Agreed, very tidy example. Spent some time as a lad in the Southern WA wheatbelt seeding and harvesting on one of those. Good honest machine.
Check the bolts fastening the belly casting to the front of the transmission. They tend to work loose and a failure can be a bit disastrous.

It certainly is in good original condition. Thank you Combustor I will make sure I check those bolts. I got the brakes apart today to see why they were not working at all. One side was seized on but had no drag. it happened to have some water in it which is why it had seized on. The other side is full of grease and gunk which I assume it should not be which is why it did not have any hope of slowing the tractor. I have not worked on tractor brakes before so am in uncharted territory. I think it should be straight forward to replace the brake lining but not sure what I need to check or do to the drums the brakes work against or how the drums come off for that matter.
Any help or tips about the brakes would be much appreciated.

Nice find Nathan,
It looks like the brake drums have to be wound off using those 2 bolt holes if they are threaded. BUT, be very careful as it looks as if it is stuck on the centre hub. Maybe just a clean up on the drums, it is not a high speed tractor for the next Bathurst race so they should be ok. As for all that grease. You need to find the source of where it is coming from and solve that issue. New linings should be an easy find through a brake place or a tractor spare parts seller. All you need to know is the ID of the drum and the width of the shoes and how many rivets you need.

Just a quick update I thought while I had the brakes a part would be a good time to pull the steering out and take up some slop. The steering looks to be in good shape the slop appears to come from two worn out split bushings on the main steering shaft should be easy to make some news ones or there might even be off the shelf ones that would suit.

it so happens i have 2 M-H books,
both show six bolts holding brake drum on.
recommend a phone call to book sellers before purchase,
ask if book shows 6bolt brakes or big ring nut like yours.
hey maybe im wrong, it is not too clear exactly what you have,
the photos show machine not yet cleaned up,
i expect a clean-up will make it obvious how they come off.
these books do show that the brake drum is attached by the centre.
maybe the PloughBookSales book

Thank you for the photos Rod. My Brake drums do appear to have a ring nut ( got a lot of grease to clean up on one side and rust on the other) but there are also holes in the brake drum which I wondered if they were for pins or something. I have had other people talk about 6 bolt pattern but no one knows what I am talking about with the nut. The nut would appear to require a special spanner which I will probably have to fabricate.
I do need to fabricate up some stands to make jobs like that a bit safer I did have a couple of props in whilst I was unbolting the front but had to get them out the road so I could roll the front end out.

I think that the drums are a press fit onto the shaft with a keyway. Can't see any 6 bolt holes as yet but may turn up after a clean. Our Cropmaster is a press fit onto the end of the main axle and was a case of using 'jack bolts' to wind it off the axle and is why I mentioned those 2 holes in the drum. Are they threaded by any chance?

Nathan, I can not see any nuts. The brake drums are pushed onto a splined shaft, some of which is protruding from the drum. According to the parts book there is no locating device, such as a circlip, so probably just a tight fit. I have not had one apart. The shaft is hollow, and is sealed with a Welch plug. The drums appear to have threaded holes in them for extractor bolts. Screwing long threaded bolts into the holes may push the drums off. There should be solid enough cast iron behind the drums for the bolts to push against.
