McCormick Deering 1.5 /3 HP engines - Mixers

Hi, I`m rebuilding two overstrikes and I have decided to make the fuel needles to fit the homemade siphons ( Both engines have corrosion in the mixers and are Kero/water units). The question is..the jet orifice size require to feed the engines. Has anyone done this before and can offer advice? Thanks Jon. (Adelaide)

I don't think the hole size is critical. Most orifices that I have seen are around a 1/16". The needle valve will control the amount of fuel.

Thanks Bill, I sort thought that might be the case +/- ...I drilled the jets to .035. I`ll make a new set to your suggestion. Thanks again. Regards Jon.

Nope. Never measured them. Just cleaned them and reused. To me it would be more critical to have those fibre washers placed correctly to stop fuel been sucked in, the butterfly to seat correctly and for the butterfly shaft to be not worn.
The taper of the needle is even probably more important then the orifice size.
I do know the hole is pretty big. Lot bigger then .035.
I've been cleaning the shed and a 1 1/2hp is at the front at the moment. I'll take the mixer screw out and see what size drill goes in for you. Hopefully I'll have a small drill bit long enough.

Went to the shed and found the 1 1/2hp HT engine. Looked to the side of it and found a 3hp over strike. Looked out under the back patio and found other 1 1/2hp HT and another 3hp over strike. They all had a .070" or 1.82mm diameter bit of wire go right through without any effort. All the smaller drill bits weren't long enough so a bit of wire was the go. 1.5mm staino TIG wire was all sloppy so a bit of plain HT fencing wire was the go.
It seems like the 1/16th guess Bill has was pretty bloody close :D
