I think it doesn't do any good to be an "expert" if you don't share the information, so even if others know more than you on Buda, if they don't share it, it doesn't matter.

Does everyone know the Nash Quad started out as the Jeffrey Quad?? Introduced in 1913, with a "36HP 4cyl Buda", Mroz's truck book says maybe 5500 or so were built in 1914 and 1914
Jeffrey was on the Lusitania, survived, decided to enjoy life and sold his company to Charles W Nash, who, per Mroz, continued the truck "essentially the same".
Some Jeffreys were sold to civilians who needed heavy duty FWD, but most went to Army; Mroz reports demand was so great they were also built by Hudson, National and Paige (originally Paige-Detroit) but he doesn't say if this was before or also during the Nash years.
Jeffrey's are probably rarer than Nash's, but you never know.

Yes, think they (Jeffries) are rarer than Nash, due to war orders alone, besides most people were slow to accept motorized heavy vehicles unless they had paved roads, whatever the machine's capabilities, few people were willing to drive them to their limits, because people were afraid of these new things, teamseters refused to learn to drive a machine instead of horses, to the point they would quit, (instead of saturday night fights between farmers and railroad men it became teamster ((horsemen)) vs. truck drivers at the local bars, and in the logging camps they stayed in seperate quarters) and of course hard tires didn't help things, it was when the four wheel drive trucks came out with the big low pressure tires on them in the 1930's that they began to hurt crawler sales.

Couldn't find any Jeffrey truck listings in my old catalogs (odd, as Mroz said very popular, reports some used out of San Diego along border in rough country, and two hauled ore from 15000' in Andes down to coast) until remembered to try car sections...
1930 wrist pin catalog had:
Jeffrey models 4016, 4017 1914-15 with Buda TU (that same catalog has the Nash Quad model 4018 1918-25 in the truck section with the Buda HU).
The engine section in that catalog shows the HU/HTU and the T/TU having different wrist pins; the TU also has early and late versions therein:
HU/HTU 4cyl 41/4 bore, pin 1.125 dia, 311/16 length
early TU 4cyl 41/8 ; pin 1.0625 dia, 37/8 length;
T and late TU 4cyl 41/4; pin 1.0625 dia, 311/16 length.
Later catalogs show the HU/HTU and the TU (T not listed) having different pistons and pins. Unfortunately the T/TU seems to show up much less often than the HU/HTU, altho in mostly the same makes in the late teens-early 20's.

A friend of mine got this old chassis that was probably one of those ex-WW1 trucks turned over to local highway departments, unfortunately the guy who moved it yanked it out wuth a winch rather than jack it up first and it snapped the spring hangers loose. I think for what he could sell it for he might better get it operational and build his own body, but he'd like to stay original as much as possible if he does that.
Yup! its a Nash. My records show your serial number to be a Model 4017, Buda engine, built in 1917 of which there were 754 built. Some were 2-wheel drive and some were 4-wheel drive. Do you have the engine? carlcalvert@sbcglobal.net.


I know this post is old....but thought I would give an update.

This Quad (well partial Quad anyway) is sitting in my garage. I got it along with a rolling chassis. My plan is to put the two together into one complete truck. I haven't even begun to work on the engine yet....quite frankly I'm a little afraid to. It will be quite the endeavor as it was sitting in the weather for so long and is partially disassembled to boot.

I'm still in the parts search phase for the most part anyway right now. I found differentials, even have an extra and a second transmission (in case I decide to build two trucks one day). Before I can really begin though I need to find a radiator as I only have the bottom bit that is shown in the pictures and preferably a better engine to start on.....or at least the missing bits like manifolds and carburetor.

I do not know if it would be the model of Buds you need but Budas were used in some early tracked excavators. The one I saw was all cable and winches, no hydraulics.
