Hello all, I recently aquired this Nelson Brothers 3HP Jumbo and thought I would share some pictures and a bit of history.
From what I gather it was used in a Bakery here on the island of Grand Cayman, and judging by the appearance it has not run in many decades. It is only the 3rd Hit and Miss engine I have come across in my life, and it is the most complete. These are quite a rarity on this island.
It is seized, the mag is missing and there is certainly a lot of rust everywhere but worst of all the water Jacket is rusted through underneath the cylinder.
I currently have been applying penetrating oil to it with a view to disassembly and hopes of possibly getting it running again. Any comments are welcome.

Your engine originally used a Remy Bros. high tension magneto. They suffered from a very poor grade of 'white metal' housing and very few working units exist. A photo of one in 1st post in this thread:

You could run it with a buzz coil & battery or get a Webster or Wico mag, bracket & trip.

Water jacket can be repaired by welding, brazing or epoxy. If it's also rusted thru into cylinder it would require sleeving.

Is this engine a hit & miss? The governor linkage and shape of the carburetor tell me that its a throttle governed type, since there is no pushrod latch.

Very interesting and somewhat unusual Nelson survivor regardless if it really was meant for a Remy magneto instead of the more commonly seen Wico EK.

I think it is throttle governed, I didn't know the difference at the time of posting, so I called it Hit and Miss.

After several weeks of soaking in Liquid Wrench, today I decided to try disassembling the engine.
The fasteners came out without too much trouble :).
Other than that the pictures say it all :bonk:

Ouch! The block split right open, yet the freeze plugs stayed in place when they should have been ejected to release the pressure and drain the water out.

Looks like the head on your engine is also split from freezing damage.

This is definitely a throttle governed engine, you've got a picture of the carburetor showing the throttle linkage. Plus the water cooled head helps prevent knocking under heavy loads, a feature not often seen on the hit & miss where the miss cycles would allow the head time to cool.

It can be rebuilt if you really wanted it to be. But if it were my engine I'd probably look for a different block and head to fit it, since the amount of force required to split them open like that almost certainly damaged the cylinder and head channels. Sleeving the cylinder will almost certainly be required, and that head might leak coolant into the valve passages from freezing damage.

The lowest temperature on record here is in the high 50's, so it's not frost damage.
Rust however, is a big problem so I would guess that someone left brackish water in it for the last 50 or 60 years, which might also explain why the freeze plugs didn't eject.
Sleeving is definitely a possibility though, the cylinder is damaged terribly; and valves, seats, guides and very likely welding are in the future as well.
From what I understand, these engines are not so plentiful even in america, and definitely no parts to be found here, so I will press on with my objective, which is to get it as close to running as possible.
I have some ideas that you guys might be interested in, so I will keep you updated as things progress, but it's one thing at a time.
I have crossed the first hurdle, which was to get it apart without causing additional damage to it. The next objective is to get the piston out, which I will soak in Liquid Wrench for three or more weeks before I try to move it.
Looking at the pluses so far: everything behind the cylinder block as well as all fasteners appear to be in good shape; everything else is either damaged or the condition is not known at this time.

Hello guys, and thanks for your interest.
I have been unable to source the necessary parts to repair the engine as designed, so I've been considering making a type of "cross-breed".
I've purchased some thick-wall aluminum tube and a 4.5" liner, with a view to fabricating a cylinder.
However, I am still considering whether to make it air or water cooled as well as a few other ideas that I have.
One of my other ideas is to adapt a partial, or entire, top end off a listeroid to it. Both engines use a 4.5" bore but the nelson has a 6" stroke while the 'roid uses a 5.5" stroke.
As you guys know almost anything is possible with sufficient determination.
I sure would appreciate your opinions as well as any alternate ideas that you might have.
