Just wondered why 8 spokes. I do get it is just a sign but most engines have 6 as dose old sign. looks good though and heavy.

I dont usually know the end use of most of the profiles we burn. I will ask engineering to pull the drawing and I will see what if anything its called on the title block.
You can rest assured Russell that its not the new CPM sign but as it was dangling there in the air I looked at it from the other end of the shop and thought hey :brows:

It's oxy fuel (propane) cut.
They are going to a gear shop.

That's super work! I knew it couldn't be waterjet as about 3 inches is the max. I thought possibly EDM as I blew the photo up and didn't see any signs of flame work. All I can say is you have some fantastic equipment and some fantastic operators.

If the machine is rigid, the travel smooth with a good flame at the proper pressure it is amazing how smooth the cut can be. A thick plate being cut over the water table makes a hard to describe crackling and popping sound from underneath, an almost tell tale sign of a good cut.
We run cnc retrofitted Lynde machines from the 60's and 70's.
Operator can program a simple part like a ring or a rectangle right at the control. Complicated profiles like the flywheel:D above are drawn by our engineering dude who also can add the appropriate kerf for the thickness being cut and then the operator can download the program wirelessly to his control.

Max thickness for a waterjet depends on the pump horsepower and what orifice/mixtube the machine has on it. I know I can comfortably cut 4" and less on a 30HP machine with an 0.011" orifice and 0.030" mix tube. That same machine did successfully cut through 6" thick, but the cut started to wander and lose its edge quality after 4".

One of the hardware vendors I get supplies for the waterjet from says they have a client that water cuts 16" thick steel with their machine, using two separate high pressure pumps working tag team to provide 24/7 operations with one pump working while the other undergoes maintenance.

I don't remember the thickest plate I've oxy cut, but I'll bet watching that 4" plate get cut was an amazing sight to see. How is the pierce handled on something that heavy? Even a 1" thick plate will want to blow boiling steel all over the machine when piercing, I'm guessing there's a technique to get it to go all the way through at 4" thick without flinging hot metal across the shop for several minutes.

At first glance I thought you had torched out a locomotive wheel! Your machine there probably could do exactly that if someone asked nicely and had a big enough budget for material and machine time...

That piece was 53"dia. We cut up to 8" thick in our shop.
To blow a hole you just use preheat/ high preheat for a few minutes until you get a small molten puddle then hit the cutting oxygen and raise the torch. The slag will flow up like volcano lava and you carefully push it away until it fully pierces. You have to blow all your holes in an item first then jog off and chip the slag off of them and sweep the plate off then go back and use those pilot holes to easily start your cut. Up to about 2" you can just blow and go.
Remember, oxy fuel is a chemical process not a mechanical one like water jet.
At my brother's place of work they do laser cutting. He brought home a thin metal sprocket hand size with a hole in it and a bunch of ridges around the outside and it took 11 seconds to cut LOL.
