No Battery Generator

Hi all my dad is trying to figure out how a no battery generator works.. he pretty sure with out a battery it will just keep crank out power until the wires melted.. any help would be great

I don’t think I understand the question. My Kohler light plant can be crank started. It puts out 120 VAC all day. No problem.

I'll give this a shot....
magnetic field passing a wire induces current to flow in that wire. But no movement, no current. Okay, to multiply how much current you can wind wire into a coil. More turns, more current. Works other way too. Currunt run through a wire causes magnetic field. But even though that magnetic field persists as long as current is flowing, to induce current in another wire or coil you must have movement.
Now every generator has a rotor with a coil of wire wrapped around a metal structure (the part that rotates.) and a Stator (coils that are stationary.) Current is fed into rotor through slip ring contacts with brushes. However there is a small amount of residual magetism in the rotor structure,. Not uncommon for there to be a small permanent magnet on rotor.

Okay, motor spins rotor inside stator. A separate stator coil called aux winding is used to feed voltage to brushes on rotor. A diode on the aux coil turns AC voltage into DC by blocking flow other direction.
So as rotor spins up the small amount of magnetism on rotor induces current to flow in aux circuit, which feeds this voltage into rotor, inducing magnetic field to grow in rotor, which then induces more current in stator coils until rotor is fully turned on. Other stator coils feed output. Once a certain voltage is reached from aux coil a module called an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) reduces amount of current fed to rotor through brushes.

But without motion supplied by motor, it all stops.

Hope this is clear enough. Motion is needed to maintain current flow.

The generator without a battery won't melt down for the same reason the battery doesn't melt down when it's sitting there not hooked to anything. If you connected a heavy wire across the generator or the battery something will melt, without connections there is no current flowing.

There are generators that will burn windings if run without a battery. A standard portable generator will do fine without a battery but a 3 brush generator on a tractor will self destruct from high field current if the battery is removed.

What type of generator is your Father talking about?

Ok dad gets the idea of how it works no problem there the Bosh and Delco no battery generators from the 30s.. his idea is that when the Gen is spinning it's making power but with out a place for it to go.. the battery it would melt.. we know because we all know about run away generators. The part that has him confused is how the voltage reg is suppose to work with no reference from the battery as to how much to put out it would think dead battery give her all I can.. He's plotting on putting this set up on a 39 McCormick W 30. But wants to understand the idea first ..

A voltage regulator regulates based on the generator voltage not the battery voltage. There are exceptions, some old mechanical regulators had a sense line for battery voltage as do the more modern electronic regulators. Some modern regulators adjust the charging rate based on voltage of the battery. A 3 brush generator requires a load but not necessary in the form of a battery.

A standard old style car or tractor mechanical regulator does not directly regulate based on the voltage of the battery in the car or tractor.

It would help to know exactly what generator and regulator your father is going to use.
