I'll go ahead and start this off. I wrote this-

If it has expensive problems, part it out. You can easily make money on it for the next one.
and got this reply

True, but I'd have a hard time doing that. I don't think something should be parted out just for the sake of making a profit. Unless it's just so far gone that there's not much to work with, I think these things should be kept intact and brought back to life. Once it's blown apart and sold off piece by piece, that's another one gone forever! This is actually a topic I've wanted to bring up on here many times to hear other peoples opinions. I see it all over the place on ebay and it really pisses me off actually. I realize "donors" are sometimes the only solution for replacement parts, but I think it should be avoided if possible. Maybe it's just me though. Maybe I'll start a new thread for this, I don't want this thread to get of course.
And I agree with much of what was written. But if noone ever parts a (presumably too expensive to repair) set out, then several more units may be sitting around waiting for hard to get parts. If parting out one set fixes one, two or three more it is a reasonable thing to do, IMHO. The fact that the person who parts one out might "make money" is just a fortunate result.

Re: To part out or not to part out????

For the good of the herd, some cattle must die.

If you have or find a basket case, wouldn't it be a better thing to breathe life into a few Onan's that are missing parts or have broken parts waiting for just the right one? Think of it like being an organ donor - sure it's sad that one dies, but if it brings life to 3 others then it never "really" dies...

Well said! This has been hashed to death on the engine side, and I don't know why some people just can't see it. I wonder how many people have engines that would be incomplete if it weren't for scavenging parts from the dead? Kevin

If parting out an old ONAN saves it from becoming chinese scrap metal and breaths life into others then it has served a noble purpose in it's death.:)

Parting out Onan 7.7 JB-3CR/12T

I have decided to part out my Onan 7.7 JB-3CR/12T with the bad block. I have started to list some of the main parts on EBay. The unit looks to have very low hours on it and all parts look almost new. I am stripping the block down and cleaning all parts for storage/sale. My aim is to get enough from it to purchase another that is listed as good condition. Check out my listings. More to come in the next few days. Merry Christmas

Re: To part out or not to part out????

I would part out about any of the Onans made in the last 40 years. There are enough of them built and a bunch are still floating around. I would not part out a repairable just for the sake of money. I have repaired several gensets by using parts off of old gensets that were not cost effective to repair. If I didn't have a so many sets that shared the same parts, I would start sell spare parts on eBay. I am fixing up a 2.5LK that has lots of hours on it. I am using some of the internal parts from a 5.0CCK that had water damage. If I had to buy a couple of the internal parts new, I would have more money in the 2.5LK than I have invested in the five 5.0CCK's that are in my fleet.

Like I said, if it's too far gone, then by all means part it out. I totally understand that donors are a necessity for our hobby. I just have a problem with parting something out that's complete and in decent condition just for the sake of making as much money as possible selling it off piece by piece.

I just got a 15.0 JC-3R and I am in need of the cover panels for the carburetor side and the top. I had to go through the carb, cleaned the plugs and points, rebuild the starter, remount the exhaust manifold and clean years of dirt dauber nests out of it, but I got it running, just need the body panels to get the cooling system working correctly. I know this is an old post and may not be monitored, just seeing what happens.
Thanks, and have a great day,
Buster
