All parts brand new. This was a fresh rebuild from an oil field supply company bought @ 7 years ago then resided in my climate controlled shop until now. Stem to guide operation silky smooth, I'll mic them tomorrow & post the numbers. Going to do the exhaust valve also since the head's off.
Couldn't find an intake valve spring adjustment description in the manual, the split nut was flush with the valve stem end. Good?
Valves lapped and well seated, intake stem clearance .002, exhaust valve stem clearance .003.
Starts well, hits strongly between 5 & 9 times before rolling to a stop. If I shoot propane from a small torch into the carb it will continue to fire intermittently. Assembling a fuel accumulator for tomorrow's attempt.
Using a full 40LB BBQ tank, maybe not enough vapor available in the full tank?
That's certainly a possibility. Another possibility is that the tank has an excess flow valve that is reacting to the engine's draw volume.
there was a time when you could use it for liquid withdrawl by simply inverting the 20lb tank, but the modern safety features (OPD/overfill) now cut off flow when that happens.
Is your tank in a warm environment? If not, try putting it inside for a few hours, to get up to 60F or so, then hook it on.
You're not feeding the J with a gas grille regulator, are you? If so, take that out- the gas grille reg won't flow enough fuel (before tripping it's excess flow feature), and the output pressure will be WAYY too low for the J to modulate fuel.
A half-full 20lb tank will work better... if you want it to run well at that small a source, using the liquid tap of a forklift tank would be more suitable. In that circumstance, the J would be evaporating liquid too, which it was designed to do. Feed it fluid, and pipe some heat over it, and it'll rock and roll...
Got it to run @ 1 or 2 minutes solid with a fully charged 4"x30" accumulator between the tank and converter proving flow volume deficiency. Working on getting an actual forklift tank and hose tomorrow.
Yes, Gary, it will... I don't know what your engine has for a flange, but I'm pretty sure Eddie (Reed) can set you up with the right gaseous mixer to fit your Reid 20's intake port. I use the same CA-100 clone mixer on my Hercules JXLD 338ci inline six, as what's on my F-M ZC-118... and the same demand regulator... they're that darned good... :shrug:
And yes, Rex- the accumulator tank for gaseous delivery working, means that you're just not getting fast enough evaporation out of the tank. Having a full tank limits the evaporation rate- it's like having a steam boiler with no steam dome... it's a surface-area issue. Using a bigger tank, or one that's half empty will help, but going liquid withdrawl to the Impco J will resove that, too. If you find it needs a little more, then mount the IMPCO J someplace where it can get some engine heat... either plumb it into the engine's cooling jacket, or mount it onto the exhaust via an aluminum bracket... it'll conduct exhaust heat into the J's shell, and improve the rate of evap, particularly on the coldest days.
It has the original valve. I use to run it in Virginia off of a gas grill reg and a accumulator that I made out on PVC and I use to run it until the tank froze and then just swap tanks and restart. But now that I live in Kansas it does not seem to want to run with it. This seems to be a better way to do things. Thanks for any and all help.
Since I have been back from deployment I finally have time to open boxes. Just got my regulator out and saw that it had 4 ports on it. What are the 2 small ones for? Do I cap them off? Will this set up work on a FM 346?
