Rookie with IHC M magy Question

Hi all
Alot of work been going on with the M, got replacement parts for missing or broken one now for the magy.
This engine has an American Bosch FX1- ED1 high tension magy.
Took the spark plug out and layed it on the hooper with lead attached, spun the flywheel and no spark, so took the plug out and held the cable while spinning the flywheel, just a bit of a tingle, so I bit the bullet and remove it from the engine and took it into the shed, cleaned it up, points, cable contacts, while doing this on my metal top bench, spun the cog and whoa what a jolt, so it must be working, so the plug must be dead. My problem is the cog has one tooth half missing and at least 4 others damaged, where would I get a 36 tooth cog from, and a spark plug old one is a Champion D22 18mm been watching ebay.

Re: Rookie with IHC M magy question

Hi Dobbo56,

New mag gears can be obtained out of the USA from a few suppliers for all sizes of the the M type engines.

Some Auto parts shops still carry 18mm champion plugs and I have also bought them in NGK too- can’t remember the number.

All my M type engines have the 7/8 unf plugs in them.

cheers Justin

The proper plug is 7/8" - 22mm. Champion actually made a special plug for the Ms. They come up on evilbay from time to time.

Hello Mr Dobbo
Any pictures of the gear and plug?
The gear may be usable pending damage. They don't need much to spin the magneto.
Also the plug maybe an older 'pull apart and clean' plug.

Is your engine a converted low tension or is it one of those fairly rare factory rotary HT magneto engines? I can't remember your particular engine....sorry.

Cheers Scott

Hi al thanks for comments.
Scotty
As far as I know it is the original magy, see photos.

Since my original post I have rebuilt the mixer, fuel pump, made a new fuel tank, got a replacement exhaust valve rocker arm and built a trolley. Get the magy going and hopefully it wiill go.
Cheers
Dobbo

Unfortunately that gear is junk as u can see the pot metal is coming apart from age. Better off getting a new replacement

I go to my local Repco store for my old plugs and where possible use NGK but I have had to settle for a mongrel champion plug for one engine but it is still working so there it will stay.
Someone here may well have a gear sitting about in the shed and maybe Rob.S might have one in his selection of fine cast products scattered about his property.

Rob and Julie are wonderful people and if they can help they certainly will. Where is your van?
We will be going to the Yesteryear Truck show mid July then if I pull my finger out our Cropmaster will be a finished long term project ready for the Rusty Iron Rally. Sand blasting was done today.

I have only spoken with Rob on the phone but was very helpful, haven't contacted him yet about the maggy cog.
Our van is at Nth Haven, we try to get there very 2 or 3 weeks for a couple of days. I'm hoping to get to the truck show at Wauhope as well, might be able to meet you there.

Nice hidy hole there. We sometimes escape to Stockton Beach van park and we like it there too. We head to Wauchope on the Friday morning and back home after lunch. We are taking Dess' HRH Sarah Ferguson, her grey fergie so we wont be far away from that.
Will you be taking anything up? Sometimes RobS turns up at this rally too.

Crappy pot metal tends to do that (zinc alloy). if you dont have any luck locally, Hit and Miss Enterprises sells new gears on this side of the pond.

Sent the maggy away to the Maggyman in Naracootre SA for complete rebuild, wont get it back for awhile.
Coils will be rewound, magnets remagnetised and new 36 tooth steel drive cog, not much dearer than buying a new cog from the USA ( cog US$138.85 + freight US $85.90). Repairs should be completed Thursday 22nd Aug but I'm away at van, ready to go to the Rusty Iron Rally 31st Aug / 1st Sept in Macksville. Then home and reinstall and timing:shrug: hopefully the M will then go.

At least you are making progress with it Paul. We will catch up at the Rally. We are taking Flo the Farm Pumper to run in the record attempt and I am still hopeful that the Cropmaster will be finished too. We arrive on Friday and head home Monday. This year we booked to go to the Rally diner again.

Have been doing other thing towards the end of this M project, been making wheels for a trolley as finding any on evil bay of the right size is not so easy. From what info I can find on line the orginal trolley has 9" front and 12" rear wheels, the best I can do is 8" front from an old oxy bottle and 13 1/2" rear. Also added a fuel tank and hopper drain tap and pipe.
We will at the rally on Saturday, see you there

Hello Mr Dobbo
It looks as though things are happening.
Did you find the size of the trolley for your little M type?
If you want a set of stencils to do the writing that they had on the side of the trolley, just PM me your address and I'll make a set and post.

Cheers Scott
