Rumely E Mechanical Restoration

I have the privlidge to work on Clarence young,s e rumely this winter. Many of the fellow stackers have probably seen it but not many have heard it run. It is a spectacular tractor with lots of original striping. It came to my place this fall, and into the shop a couple weeks ago. The plan is to do a mechanical tuneup or restoration.... whatever is necessary as seen fit. Replace rear wheels with correct wheels, which are already at larsons machine shop in Fargo. Thus far has been a lot of power washing with a lot more to do yet. Ambitious goal is to have it done by spring. I will share progress and pics on smokstak and appreciate input. Locally we are hoping for a rumely feature at rollag, and the e will go there for a while if the board wants it there for a while. Anyone that has done this kind of thing before knows the procedure. Lots of washing, dirty fuel tanks, dried out packing, etc etc. I bought a big a frame at Tony rivers sale this summer at crosby and a forklift in shop, I can see these will be valuable tools in the shop on a project of this magnitude.

Hi Luke, That tractor must have done a pile of work but usually stored inside. Not a Good candidate for paint. Are you going to keep the owner developed modification kits that are all over that tractor. I think if it were mine I would, if they worked OK. I'd even keep those earlier rear wheels, the patina is just right and they ride better on hard roads----they each have 48 cleats in place of the 20 spoke wheels having just 40. It sure is a great example of a hard working old "E" P S what is her serial number?

Yes halcon I will keep as many of the original mods as possible. Gear oil cups mounted on exhaust stacks suggests use in cold weather. A wood platform in front of engine.....i want to keep it there but struggle to know for what purpose a person would spend that much time up there for. There will be a new roof made, rear wood floor as well. The paint brush will not be seeing this tractor...

Bent pipes and small radiator but 8 spoke master and 16 spoke wheels were a replacement?
I'm still looking for a satisfactory master gear and we need master pinions replaced or welded (on differential sleeve). I lost my old gear designer before we decided on final approach. Master gears I had cast are so bad that a machinist will not work on machining the hub bore and lugs. How is the gearing and what has been replaced or renewed? Mine was overhauled at least once before. Serial number? Mine is 766.

The pinions are wore down and will be built up and turned down. All the rest of the gears look pretty darn good. I don't know what all it has had done before in regards to work done to it, but I expect it has had an overhaul or two. The valves are nice and thick, minimal carbon buildup on head and piston top..lots of washing today and pictures to come tonight. We have correct rear wheels at larsons, serial number on here is ard 1400 i think

Lots of originality here. It cleaned up well being careful to not ruin original stencils. In side frame I was surprised to see they do actually have gold metal flake look to them

I don't know if this e had an off season.. an extra flat belt pulley for belt work. It has wiring and bracket for Hamm headlight. And gear oilers mounted to exhaust stacks suggests use in cold weather and pulling while cold.

I took the top valve cage off on Friday as I couldn't get the heads to budge. I then fashioned a puller that pulls from center pipe thread of head and drilled end of shaft and threaded it for a bolt to go from inside of jug and into shaft. Then we were pulling on pipe threads, and the bolt that goes through and tightened thru the head. With a hollow ram and a solid piece of metal we put pressure pulling out on head with the head studs being the steady. At this point I had jesse Warren and dean lemer helping as they both stopped by at a good time. We started with screwdrivers and then chisels, being careful to keep head even while removing it, because of the deep inset of the head into combustion chamber. Thanks to them we got the heads off, a real pita by yourself going from underneath then side then top..so much thanks to them:salute:.

Original leather cover on magneto, how cool is that. A very cherry red front axle, striping on front wheels.. not too shabby.
The removal of the igniters wasn't a good modification. Maybe Clarence has some igniters in stock. A plus is they left you the operating rod and trigger at least on the right side anyway. :D He might have the proper Bosch low tension mag also. The right leather cover has a sort of a porch on it to cover the terminal.

I popped the top off the motor tonight. Like opening a big Christmas present. And oh boy did she look good. Clean, everything covered with a nice layer of oil. Lots of shims in rods. I took my ball hone and cleaned the cylinder tops first as there was surface rust. I then took pistons to bottom of stroke and hit it again with ball hone and wiped it clean. After that it was 1 piston pushed out at a time. Quite a job when you are by yourself. First piston presented stuck rings and good wristpins .. I can handle that. Second piston, presented the same.. gonna soak them up and save the rings I don't see the need for replacement rings. Clean the lands,and call it good

I love the picture of the piston by the pop can.... I took the ball hone to each cylinder for some time on each cylinder to clean them up and get a good cross hatch in bores. It was tasking on the drills, so I had 2 so I could let them cool as I rotated them. 10 inch bore presents a lot of surface area on ball hone. I was very pleased with how it turned out.

I have an early picture of my B with a large square tank mounted on the front. I don't know whether it was for fuel or water. I was told it was removed during the first season. This may be what your front platform was for.

If you remove a piston, press one way only. They are stepped three different diameters. That way, you can regrind the wrist pin journal od without affecting the piston boss fit. I know of someone who broke a piston pressing the wrong way with a big press.
