Sachs 98cc Engine?

This is a long shot, but...anyone have experience with a Sachs 98cc engine? Mine, is original to a 1954 Hercules Model 212. Just having a hard time coming up with info other than parts manuals.Specifically, I'd really like to get hold of a wiring diagram and good information about the gearbox oil fill. Thanks!

Neat little bike! The trans fill might be like Triumph used in that there is a stand tube built into the drain plug. You take out the center bolt out of the larger drain plug and fill with oil until it runs out of the over flow.

neat bike the sachs I had took 30 wt 8 oz of oil in gear box mine was also a 2 cycle the gas cap also had a measuring cup to use non det oil in the gas about 4 oz per gallon I will have to look I used to have a manual for a sachs and jawa motorcycle now retired I have 37+ motorcycles from a 1910 indian 1941 Harley triumphs nortons bmws bsa every thing but jap crap

I have a 1940 Wanderer motor bike with a 98 CC Sachs engine. I put 30 wt in the gear box. If you have to take the flywheel off, it takes a left hand thread bolt pin. I talked to a gent. and mentioned there will be a older motorcycle show in OHIO and was going to look up any info for me. If I get any I'll let you know.

Thanks for the tips! Another question...the Fichtel & Sachs carb on this engine - I'm sure it's the original - besides being the simplest carb I've ever seen...has a great tendency to flood. And I'm sure the float/needle is working just fine. Make any sense?

If it has a BRASS float, remove it and shake it to see if it has leaked and taken on gasoline inside it. If so then you need to find the leak, empty the gasoline out of it and solder the hole with a LIGHT amount of solder.

I've shaken the float. I've submerged it and watched for bubbles. Seems just fine. The needle it slides on is clean and straight. The needle seats tightly, w/o effort. So - strange. One theory (and this is based on nothing but my own ignorance)...is that the exhaust really needs a good cleaning. When running, I get a fairly healthy drip of oily, black stuff coming out. I think the muffler has never been cleaned...and that back pressure is a problem. I know, I know. Why would that cause carb flooding? But I'm grasping at straws here. Thing is - I can't get the muffler off the header pipe...nor the header pipe off the engine...with non-damaging persuasion just yet. The pieces seemed joined for all eternity - in spite of WD-40 and heat applications. But tat's where she sits right now.

I'm not familiar with this carb but had a flooding issue in a Briggs & Stratton carb some years ago. A replacement filter housing and gasket covered up the vent hole in the carb causing the carburetor to flood. Drilling a hole in the housing and gasket in the same location as the vent hole solved the problem.

Is it possible there's a vent in the carburetor somewhere that's plugged or restricted?

I would also suggest you find something other than WD-40 to use as a penetrating oil. It's about the most ineffective thing that I've tried although it's doubtful any of them live up to their advertising. I've heard good things about a product called "Deep Creep" but haven't tried it yet myself.

might get some carb flote material and make a new float.I never did like those barrel foats,usually the same results as your experiencing.

I have a Zundapp motor bike that looks exactly like yours, except for a different front fork, but mine was separated from it's engine many years ago and from the searching I have done online for a replacement, it seems to be a scarce engine. We rode it all over the farm and back roads when I was a kid. Wish I could find an engine to put it back together. Roland
