Schramm Compressor, Wisconsin V4

I just aquired A Schram compressor, Wisconsin V4, 2 cylinders under power and 2 compress air. I believe it to be 1950's but would like to know the right year.It starts , runs and makes good air. The motor is pretty clean with no oil leaks. Compression on the motor side seems real low but I don't know this engine(25 lbs) both cylinders. The spark plugs show no sign of oil and I am getting a lot of blowback from the oil fill. I suspect stuck rings but don't know why the plugs would be bone dry. I also would love to aquire a maual. Curios as to what the unit would bring if sold? I also have the axle and tounge to make it a pull behind unit. Any help would be appreciated.

The unit is a 1950, I will look to see if I have a manual for it.

I have the same compressor. mine is a 1968. It runs great. I bought mine from a guy on craigslist, I paid $600.00. The year of manufacture is stamped on the spec tag welded to the air tank. The year is stamped as 68 for 1968 on the tag. It may be possible that yours is newer than 1950, I see it has a points distributor, the older ones had a magnito distributor. I havnt figured out how to post pics yet. Last year there was a Schramm 40 I think 1974, that looked absolutly brand new. It was list for about 6 months for $1900.00 no takers. Then the ad dissapiered.

The tag on the tank is the spec info for the tank, the year on the tag is when the tank was made. This could be the year of the compressor, but not necessarily true.

His compressor is a 1950 by Schramm Inc. serial number list.

With 25 pounds of compression yes the rings are stuck or simply worn out. The blow by obviously is from the engine side but consider that perhaps the compressor side also is leaking into the crankcase.

Run a few heat cycles and see if the rings loosen up. Also soak the cylinders with penetrant oil for a week or two to to see if this helps. Otherwise it's rip n teardown time.

The Wisconsin engines are only 5.5 to 1 compression so a healthy engine, depending on cranking speed, you might see 90 to 110 psi compression. I have seen a Model A engine where the center two cylinders were the compressor and the outer two were the engine. Another company used a small block Ford V8 engine where one bank of four cylinders were the engine and the opposite bank of four cylinders was the compressor. My thinking is that the cylinders that are the engine work pretty hard driving the same bore and stroke for the compressor side. Take any engine and disable half of the cylinders and see how hard the remaining work. That is sure a neat set up though.
