Hello All,

It looks like the stationary has a piece of tungsten or the like material.

Should the rotating contactor side also have the same?

Is the stationary stud/contactor retained by a nut on the combustion side? What I'm looking at is what remains of the nut?

Yes these are contact points. The fixed one has enough 'meat' there to be dressed up and used but the issue is that it has been welded in place for some reason to the engine. Not sure how much meat is on the ignitor shaft side but it too might be able to be dressed up for use. So once you have 2 good clean contacts you have the source of igniton for the engine to run. Some ignitors run with the points open and only close when it is time to spark and some work the opposite way and stay closed and open to spark. This would depend on type of magneto you have and the engine it is in.
New contacts may well be available through one of the sponsors listed at the top of the page. Then the shaft will need to be sealed and insulated when refitted into the engine and have no free play up and down or in and out.

It was not welded into place, but I admit that it looked a bit so.

I was able to disassemble the ignitor completely. The fixed side stud is ruined, although I was able to remove the contact point just for fun, and it's little stud even came out.

I will shop for repair parts. I believe that there is some of the contact point on the moving side left, and it may be able to be dressed.

I have the mag disassembled too. I will post some pictures early next week.

At the top of this page is a dark blue tool bar and on the right hand end is a 'sponsors' link. Find one close by and they should be able to supply.
Look forward to any progress. Remember to check the insulation and order some in at the same time. In the past mica was used but there is dar better products available now through the sponsors.

You can see the brass cover [brush holder]? has separated from the end plate. It dropped down and wore on the shaft a bit.

What I assume if a carbon brush is gone, along with it's holder and screw. The bushings are tight, although there is s small trough worn into the axles where the carbon rubbed.

I am looking for advice on repairs. DYI, or send it off?

Do a search here for a manual for your model magneto. There just might be one so you see what everything should look like.
As to whether you do it or send it out will depend on your abilty and access to any special tools that might be required.
In one of the images there appears to be a lot of wear with a gap on the top left side. If that is not suppose to be there this will require some milling and lathe work to fix.
Contact one of the sponsors at the top of the page in the dark blue tool bar, right hand end and ask them the cost of a fix or exchange.

If you enlarge the three pictures post last, you'll see that what is worn is the pressed sheet brass piece.

From a post above that:

I could re-solder it, and the gap would hurt nothing. However, the threaded bung and screw that you can see in the good end plate are both gone. I can buy a new end plate, with the pressed piece attached for $45 ish.

I have been in contact with some of the vendors. I am planning to do some testing and may well choose to repair it myself, with a new end plate. I have been in contact with some of the vendors. Some will sell dyi parts.

p.s. - To All;

I suspect that what I called a round brush in an earlier post isn't what I thought. Is it merely an oiling wick?

Great news your parts are available and that you can do the repairs yourself as well. Test your coil and condensor before you order other parts to make sure they are good.

This is a oscillator engine, no coil, no condenser, no battery, no spark plug. The Sumter #14 is a low tension magneto and fires an ignitor. See pictures.

I'm sending the mag and ignitor to Rudy. If it were mine, I would attempt dyi repairs, but the engine belongs to my employer. Taking my wages into account, it seems illogical to dyi.

low tension magneto still has a coil at least. That is one of the basics of generating the electricity to make the spark.
That is unless I have learnt nothing over the last decade.

I'm sorry, I assumed that you meant coil and condenser as in Kettering ignition. Thanks again for your input.
