TMD27 SAE Flywheel

Hello Folks,

I'm finally going to dig out my TMD27 engine in my shed and try once again to get back to my generator build project.

I have finally found a SAE 4 bellhousing for it. (the engine was from a welder which was dead, but the engine was great)

Being from a welder, the existing flywheel is a non-SAE, special for mating to the welder armature. So, now I have a bellhousing to bolt up, but the flywheel, not SAE will need replacing with an SAE type for use with a gen head.

I am looking for a used reasonably priced SAE flywheel, but that doesn't look promising.

So here is my situation...
The bellhousing I bought came with a flywheel meant for a clutch application...it may have come from a power unit with a PTO setup, but I dont know this for sure, just guessing. The flywheel is a full faced flywheel without the boltholes drilled/tapped for a SAE coupler plate. There is plenty of room to lathe turn an SAE recessed lip and drill/tap pattern in it.

Now the question:
If I have the flywheel turned on a lathe, and drilled/tapped with the correct SAE hole layout for the gen coupler, will I need to have the flywheel re-balanced? I know 1800 rpm is not as fast as a 3600 engine, but I am concerned about vibration if the work is not of quality precision.

Has anyone here done anything similar?
Am I crazy to try this?
Im guessing I can get a machine shop to turn the flywheel, drill/tap the holes for far less than the $500 quote I got for a new flywheel.

Any thoughts to share here?
I have had no luck finding a used SAE flywheel.
Thanks much for your help.

Re: tmd27 sae flywheel

Would you be interested in swapping a Kubota engine for the TMD? I need one for my crane, have several Kubota engines.

Im inclined to say no to a trade, as I just bought the bell housing after several years of searching for one. Also, I do know the history regarding my low hours TMD27. Ive got a lot of money tied up in this engine/bell housing at this point. Im too embarrassed to say. I am however, open minded at the same time.

I know nothing about the Kubota engines. As to yours in particular, can you share some info on it, such as model number history hours, etc. ?
Also, does it have a SAE bell housing and flywheel which will accept a generator head?

It's ok to private message if you wish

What is a TMD engine? What is a SAE flywheel? I have a military engine that I would trade the flywheel for a flywheel that I could use with a clutch.

Wisconsin Continental TMD27 diesel engine, or TM27 gasoline engine, 4 cylinder

SAE is Society of Automotive Engineers; standard industry sizes of bell housing and flywheel

free feel to private message me with the flywheel dims or post here

I know about the SAE bell housings, but I have never heard about SAE flywheels. I'll take a picture of the flywheel end of my engine and post it here.

hello and thanks, please add engine info and dims if possible.
no offense, but without any info, it's just a photo of a flywheel.

i would need dims and spec info to determine if i could use it.
thanks

I don't think the flywheels will interchange, different engines. It is a Hercules 298 diesel engine. The bolts holes in the bellhousing (180 degrees apart) are 18 1/4" and the dia of the recess in the flywheel is 15 1/2".

thanks for the photo and dims. Correct, the flywheel from your herc is way different in size. the flywheel I will need is about 13.75" overall diameter with the hole pattern 9.58"

I appreciate your trying to help.
