Unknown Engine

I picked up this engine this afternoon from the club stall at the 1000 engine rally in England , it was listed as an unknown make , I think it could be American , the magneto is English and probably the mixer too . It is a two stroke with a drain at the bottom of the crankcase , it also has a copper rod in the manifold which I,m thinking is to heat the air inlet ??
I'm expecting some repairs to the cylinder to show up when the paint is removed . Any clues to maker would be appreciated .

I took the top cover off the water jacket today to turn it around to get the outlet on the other side and look what I found ..... it has an aircooled cylinder , it must have been converted at some stage , there is a lot of braze and a patch on the jacket which I put down to frost damage . There is a sleeve around the sparkplug that is brazed in which I thought was odd , now I know why .
A lot of work has gone into keeping the engine in use , I am not going to " unfix it " of cover it with paint .

Can anyone think of the maker ??

It looks like someone with time and ingenuity really wanted a liquid cool engine. Me thinks it is a one of a kind orphan, well worth the time and effort to bring it back to life. Don't change anything from its original or post original state. Might have started out as a Nova???:shrug:

The first picture looks very much like my engine , the patch is the same .
I don't intend to change anything on the engine , apart from maybe putting the correct mixer on if I could find one ?
Next question does anyone know what it would have been used for and what age could it be.

Here is the engine running today, I have fitted a starter to help until the settings are correct, it,s not perfect but it is getting there. I will be keeping it unpainted as it shows all the work that was done to convert it to watercooled.

Here is the engine running after fitting a buzz coil , runs a lot slower but its still a bit shakey, I have fitted a water pump so that I could put a lower tank on the trolley. It is not as noisey as it seems on the video . One thing I found out is it will run backwards just by moving the timing slightly. The red petrol can has had a side cut out and this holds the coil , I was going to put the battery in but its just little bit to big .

The ability to run in either direction was a feature of the Fairmont speeder engine too. Makes sense too since that is a lot easier than turning the speeder around on the tracks.

It took a while but I have just got a photograph of the correct mixer for this engine, I,ve not seen one like it before , I know it's a long shot but does anyone happen to have one .
The exhaust comes out of the bottom of the casting which makes me think the engine could run on paraffin?

Quite a saga Nev, my question would be what does that very fine looking brass mixer that is on it come from? Do you think it was a marine conversion or given the age could someone have been messing about with a light car, garden tractor etc.? If a marine conversion one would expect to see some sort of brackets to allow it to be mounted to a typical engine bed.:confused:
