Is it time for another thread on a Canadian engine? Waterloo is a very British name but the Ontario town is very German and the adjoining city of Kitchener was called Berlin until people got uppitty during WW1! The Waterloo Manufacturing Co. people were very much from the German persuasion. The first pic is of unknown origin but shows an early 14 hp traction with the older style plain smokebox door rather than the lion's head on. The second pic is of their largest engine, the 30hp rear mount. This is an interesting outfit and has a massive boiler (old G knows all about keeping the firebox on it filled!) but a rather small motor. I guess they were going for long distance plowing and steam capacity rather than brute power? There are only 2 of these, this one in Ontario and one in Alberta and parts of another in Manitoba. Waterloos were noted for their easy steaming ability. The last is a threshing scene near Melita, in southern Manitoba.

Mr. Searson - Not sure if I am thinking of the same engine as you post above; but don't think it is running yet? Here are a couple more :
25 side mount engine at WDM Yorkton, Saskatchewan. This is an excellent machine and they were plowing with it last time I saw it. The first 25s had lap seam boilers but later ones like this used a heavy butt strap. Waterloo ran at 175 lbs even with their lap seams! Probably the best all round engine that Waterloo made and plenty of them on the Prairies and in Ontario.
The other is a 27hp rear mount. These were the same heavy boilers as the 25s above except converted to rear mount. This was taken in Sask, supposedly at Star City(??). There are only a couple of these left, one at WDM Saskatoon and the other in private hands in Sask.

Here are a couple more of the 30hp Waterloo at Beaverlodge, Alberta. One is as found, I guess and then after some work. Pictures were from Mr. McLean.
I have never seen this one except in pictures and it is a bit of a puzzler in that the front axle is set back behind the tube sheet. The other ones I have seen and any catalogue pictures show the axle under the smoke box?

It is probably a toss up between the 20hp Sawyer-Massey and the 20-22 Waterloo as to which was the more popular in Ontario back in the day? Both were fine engines, the Sawyer having the butt strap boiler while Waterloo cheerfully kept building the triple rivetted lap seams. They ran 175 lbs on their laps with no history of problems. In time, they would have thinning in the fire box like most other engines - at the corners, inside knuckle areas and around the fusible plug areas. I know of one 20-22 Waterloo with a butt strap boiler so they likely made a handful, maybe to satisfy Alberta regulations?
First pic is of the Shillinglaw family 20-22 from Londesborough (?). It is a nice, original engine and in the background is the Gleadall family 20-22 (I think?) from the Orillia area - it has an Oliver welded boiler.
The other pic is from the Waterloo catalogue of the early 1920s. The 20-22 was a 20hp motor on a 22 boiler. 8&7/8 x 10 cylinder according to the book. They were a dandy engine for Ontario threshing and saw mill work.

I know I posted this photo a long time ago, but I thought it should be on Mr. Williker's thread too. This engine was owned by the late Walt Christopherson and was at Cut Bank, Montana, at that time. I don't remember if it had a butt strap boiler or not, G.? Being south of Alberta, it could have had one? My old mind isn't what it used to be.:bonk: :shrug:

Gary - thanks for the picture above. It must be a 25 and likely the butt boiler. They also made a 30 side mount but I have never seen one. If anyone has data on them, it would be nice if they could post it here:) I had the high bid on a Waterloo catalogue a couple of years ago on Craig's favourite sale site, that covered the 30s. But the guy had a reserve on it and I couldn't get anywhere with him:mad: They must have been quite an outfit?

Where was the pic taken? I'm not sure if that if Jim's or Roy Hastings. They were both completed at the same time, and both have Oliver boilers. If this is at Blyth it may well be Roy's, as I don't think Jim has attend there. Roy did not have a canopy for sometime, and may well have attended Blyth upon completion at Boiler Bob's. As they were at one time owned by the same owner, they were indeed painted in the same colour scheme. It was difficult to tell them apart at a glance at one time.

how many waterloo's are still running in ontario does anybody know?

Robert - You may be right about that being Roy's engine. It was taken at Blyth about the time the new boiler was fitted. I have Jim's name written on the back but as you know, there has been some damage done to old G's brain along the way and things do get bunched up? Are those 2 engines still around? I haven't seen them lately.
And Casertractor - You have a ways to go with that list. There are more Waterloos in Upper Canada than you might imagine. Speaking of the Museum at Milton, there is a dandy 20-22 Waterloo in there that wouldn't take much to get going - could be a good project for you???????

yes the 20-22 is a good engine but dont forget all those engines are cosmetic restoration and would need a new boiler .the other is a older waterloo it is in the same building and the other is in storage some were else
in the museum sorry but thats all my mind will let me remember because all the ones i listed run the local shows i know their are more i know in the anniversary book of the steam-era thier are photos of waterloos in past years that have attended their names are not availble antother i forgot to mention is the engine of bob clarke of right here in milton ontario i remeber helping on that engine here at our show steam -era what an engine that was
i hear it is having a new boiler installed .

The picture taken in Blyth was Bruce Shillinglaw's in front and Jim Gleadall's behind it. I had both of them at the Blyth show the same year. Roy Hastings and Jim Gleadall still own both these Waterloo's.

Here is a bit more from the Waterloo catalogues:
The 2 speed set up was used on a lot of Waterloos and consisted of a sliding gear that slid inside the larger gear and I hope this cut shows up ok. Two speed had some popularity in Ontario for your high performance road moves of the seperator from farm to farm. George Whites used a sliding, stepped gear arrangement and I believe Sawyer had some 2 speeds and maybe Mr. Searson will have something to say about them?
The other shot is of the Waterloo triple lap boiler with steam dryer and of the adjustable exhaust nozzle - that accounts for the hand wheel you will see on the left side of the smokbox in some pix. Not all Waterloos used the adj nozzle.

Waterloo also took engines on trade, rebuilt and resold them as evidenced by the tag on this little Case engine - I hope it turns out and if not, I will have to rescan and work with it a bit. Before anyone asks, I have not a clue who owns this Case, etc, but it is a pic I took at the Athens, Ontario show in Eastern Ontario close to 20 years ago. It says Sold by he Waterloo Manufacturing Co, etc.. Waterloo sales records are at the University of Guelph and they are full of some very interesting deals and trade ins!
The other picture is of Mr. Bucknall's 20-22 at the Niagara on the Lake Peach Festival in 2005. They are steaming corn and do a couple hundred dozen a day there - mmmm good corn! He has another similar engine not yet restored. When ND testing was brought into Ontario 10-12 years ago, Mr. B took this engine into Foster-Wheeler boiler plant in St Catherines, Ont and they subjected it to nuclear isotope testing of thicknesses, seams, etc.. This boiler measured out superbly, showing little or no deterioration from the original. However, all laps seams in Ontario are limited to 100 lbs.

I hope all this Waterloo stuff is not getting boring - actually, I have enough to go on, well, forever:zz: Anyway, here are a couple more:
First is of Bob Lowe's excellent 25 on the saw mill at the Paisley, Ontario show in 2005. There are more pix of it on the Paisley show thread a few pages down.
Also, is a shot from one of the Brandon, Manitoba Exhibitions from the early teens. It shows a smaller engine, maybe an 18 or 20 hp and in the background, one of the nice 27 rearmount engines. The threshers will be Waterloos as well. They built train loads of wood and later steel threshing mills. I like the lads standing in front - blockmen, maybe?

caser - Jim's is most certainly still running, in fact he is going pretty well every weekend. He does a ton of local events in the Niagara area. Bob's old engine is down right now and the Woods family are getting a new boiler for it. I think there was some thinning in the fire box.
