Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

My First Onan i bought was from a member on this forum .its My BF-3/CR 120/240 onan. he had it on craigs list . he was asking a fair price for it. the day i went to look at it it would not start. he set there on a stool and he would not let me buy it until he got it to running and showed me it made power. he hooked up to 1500 watts heaters to it. the trouble was the electric fuel pump was bad. he took another fuel pump off of his other Onan that is his keeper and put it on my BF- 3/CR . now that is the kinda fellow i don,t mind dealing with. just wanted to share my story. Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

the onan sits in a shed about 100 ft away from the house.
As a project, I decided to keep all of my batteries in the shed topped off with solar.

I have 3small panels for about 45 watts, going into a charge controller that keeps the batteries topped off.

Now I do not have to fear going out to the shed , and hitting the preheat and nothing happening to the djb.

as a benefit , I got to learn a little about solar:)

Keep the snow and ice off the solar panels.

Scoops that is pretty slick set up solar panels to keep battries charged. some times i think about getting just a small watt panel to try something like that.

Thanks Dan.

Ina perfect world someday, I'd like to have a solar array and only use the generator to charge the batteries on cloudy days.

What are you using for a charge controller?

It's a 10amp 12/24v Pwm controller. Seems to handle the charging properly.

Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

I took my little LK that is mounted on my service truck for a 20 mile ride to a neighboring town, the temperature outside was 12 degrees when I got to the job site.

I hit the prime switch for a minute then the start switch. It hesitated for a moment, as if to ask if I really wanted to do this, then rolled over a couple times & started.:) I plugged in my sewer machine & space heater, stood outside with a nice northwest wind blowing across my butt and the space heater about 2' away blowing on my front side. Got the sewer opened up. Said a little thank you to D. W. Onan & shut the LK off.

I think I may give the old girl a fresh change of oil this evening.

Zero degrees last evening, my inverter calved to provide a little light in my shop for some snowshoeing Scouts, so I fired up the DJA to light things up. 20 minutes of propane torch on the oil pan, one minute of glow plugs and an assist boost from the pickup and b...b...b...ba...ba...bang...bang ..bang-bang-bang.

The only one who knew anything about diesels was impressed and had 20 questions. The rest liked the light, woodstove heat and hot chocolate.

Well I got a nice little 2.7 to 3.5Kw AJ series genny for 200 bucks, cleaned points and adjusted to .o20 replaced the ground wire to the coil, dismantled and cleaned all contacts on coil and condensers, replaced breather tube, seafoamed it replaced j-box with a plastic one and hard wired in my feed line to the trailer, put a new 20 amp breaker in (was a 30A) and put the breaker in a better protected area, made new gasket for the fuel pump

replaced high tension wire and spark plug and now got it purring pretty good still misses and hunts a bit but that's another days project.

So all in all did allot! BTY Hi first post came over from the other power forum, all ways loved the Onans

Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

I started the conversion on my 1972 5.0cck r3 to multi fuel carburetion. I found a cherry nat gas cck carb and with another core carb, I have all the gasoline jetting for it. I found all the manual choke cable and carb bracket for the cable, NOS on ebay. I machined a piece to have welded on the choke shaft to fit the choke cable. I will mount a ON-ON rocker switch to switch between the gasoline fuel pump and the nat gas shut off valve. I also form the same engine the nat gas carb came from recovered a cherry set of high compression heads that will boost the power loss when running on nat gas. It will be ok on gasoline too because my set is not mounted in a motorhome and the ventilation is better.

Here are some pictures to go with my post (As the old forum(s) saying goes: No pics it didn't happen!), has run for about 20 hours with out a drip of oil leaked!

you can see more pictures in my thread "Help to identify an Onan AJ series gen set"

Hope you guys enjoy the tech porn ;) I sure enjoyed making it! and as the saying goes: With enough swearing and a good drill and hammer any thing will fit together!

Nothing to mine but found one on craigslist. From a small engine repair guy, say it is a 4kw out of a rv. I e-mailed him and asked for the model# and if I could see it produce power. I have to keep myself from buying it just because it is green or it will be like my orange and old vehicle problem according to the wife.

Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

Been cold all week and the snow is getting deeper. i just had to get to the garage today coz cabin fever is setting in. first on my BF3CR i took that little rubber o ring out of the points box cover it was causing the point rod to pump a little oil so that stopped that. now on the BFA-1R i got a small little seeper of oil on one of the valve box covers. i got the cork gasket material. has any one made these before? should,nt be to hard to cut out one? any how i ran them and hour a piece today with a 1500 watt load on them. like to get that engine oil nice and hot to help keep out the moisture when the metal in the oil pan is cold. Cheers

The cork is a PIA to cut, takes a very sharp knife. Most of the ones I have installed are thick paper gasket material.

It is above freezing here today with bright sunshine. I stripped the sheet metal off the NHE & sprayed it down with degreaser. Next step, get out the pressure washer & give it a bath out front of the shop.

Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

an Exacto knife works well for cutting cork gasket material. I put a piece of luan on the bench, spray a little contact cement on the cork and lay it out flat. Then take the valve cover and hold it down with a bar clamp . then take the exacto knife and cut around the outside with a 1/4" margin allowed.

Peel the cork up and cut the interior with the cork stuck to the valve cover with a light coat of the spray contact cement. I have an old set of gasket punches for cutting bolt holes out, that came from my grandfathers tool collection.
Presto one new gasket.

Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

The air temp. rose above 32 degrees today, so I thought I'd spend some time with the 5.0 CCK. I have'nt had time to do anything with it since I picked it up until now.
The plan was to degrease everything, perform a complete tune up, points, plugs, condensor, new plug wires, clean the carb., clean the gas tank, replace the fuel line, and filter.

Things did'nt quite work out though. I picked up the wrong diameter fuel line and filter. Onan also sent what turned out to be two different spark plugs, one having a long shaft, the other one short. I left the old plugs in for now.

I did'nt want to run the engine with the old dirty fuel filter in place after cleaning the carb., so I just pushed it back into the garage.

Looks like I need to spend a little more time with the old girl.
