I was told it ran 2-3 years ago. So far, it doesn’t have spark, starter won’t retract, and the wire from the switch to the solenoid is melted into a brick.

I have a couple of questions about this thing. I have zero experience with generators and any insight is much appreciated.

Is this a 12v starting system?

It says on the data plate that it’s 3 phase and 31 amps. Is 31 the maximum amperage draw the generator can handle, or just what the wiring is rated for? A few of the receptacles are 20 amp and one is 30 amp.

This generator was used to power the clubhouse at a country club when the power went out. Most likely to run the kitchen appliances so the food wasn’t lost I imagine. I Would think 30 amps would be on the low side for that.

Hi Cleavon, welcome to smokstak. That is a very nice find. I would suspect the no spark issue is simply due to corroded points in the magneto. The magneto is mounted just behind the flywheel in picture #1, in front of the orange oil filter. You can access the points by removing the black bakelite cover on the magneto. All you really need is an emory board, a screwdriver and a set of feeler gauges. The starter could be an easy fix. It would be best to remove it from the engine to test on the bench. The bendix is probably dirty and corroded. It is easy enough to remove the nose cone of the starter and clean the bendix. I would suspect that the starter is 12 volts but to be sure check the tag on the starter. If voltage is not listed, post the number of the Prestolite starter and we can tell you what voltage it is. I am not sure about the amperage rating on your generator. The engine on your generator is a Wisconsin VH4D, it is rated 22.5 horsepower at 1800rpm, more than enough to run a 12,500 watt load continuously.

Thanks Chris. It’s definitely a heavy piece of machinery. I’m hoping I can get it running and sort out the wiring so that I can run a welder off of it.

I pulled the cover off to check the points and some oil drained out. I’m assuming that it should be dry in there.

Clean the slip rings on the generator before you run it. Be sure the brushes are free in their holders.
The starter needs the engine to fire to make it retract. When the engine kicks off it'll send the pinion back on it's shaft. It should be good unless it's rusted to the shaft.

Yeah, the seal on the magneto is bad if it has oil in it. This won't stop you from getting it running though.

Just sitting here massaging a rum n coke and I thought I'd throw this out there for you.

You'll get it running in short order but here's one of those pain in the butt situations that happens with these Wisconsin V4's.
I'm assuming you'll keep it and it also will be a very seldom used machine. These engines are prone to developing rust on the valve guides and sticking the valves when stored for prolonged periods.

On the intake manifold there is a 1/8" pipe plug that is used for engine pickling for storage. *The manual mentions use of this.

Put a valve in this port that has a hose barb on it. When you're done running the thing, put a plastic hose on it and into a bottle of oil. Start it up cold and open the valve letting it suck oil in until it smokes like crazy then hit the stop switch. This lubes the cylinders, rings, and valves and it can sit for years with no problems. It'll smoke a bit when you next use it but that's quite minor compared to taking things apart to fix it.

Thanks for the tip. I can pull the vacuum line off of the governor and let it pull some oil through there.

The started cutting out the mass of melted wiring and it seems the 12v wire going into the transformer is melted as well. I guess I’ll find out if the transformer is still good when I get it running.

Wish I hadn’t changed the oil before I found out I needed to access the points. It’s much easier to get to with the oil filter out of the way.

You sure about that? Most likely it is an oil line. I don't have a book for a V4HD, but my VF4 book shows an oil line from crankcase to gov.

The line from the block to the governor is a pressurized line. It lubes the governor then the oil goes down through the gear train by gravity. Note that these engines will only develop 5-10 psi of pressure.

E92CFE8F-471D-4D74-9973-693DE15381C4.jpgHere’s a picture of what I’m looking at. I haven’t seen it in the manuals that I have found, but the model number for this generator is slightly different than the ones I have seen on wincogen.com, although they look to be the same.

I’m guessing it’s a vacuum canister for controlling idle? Its connected to the governor lever.

Connected directly to the intake manifold tells me something is missing between the dash pot and the controls. As is it does nothing to control the throttle speed and can be removed and replaced with the standard bolt that assures 1800 rpm always.

It may be there to improve speed regulation. I believe there were some Onans so equipped as well...

Increasing manifold vacuum works to slightly lower the governor set point, pulling the throttle a little bit more towards closed and vice versa with decreasing manifold vacuum.

I had to set this aside for a bit while we were in the process of buying a house and moving/trying to sell stuff so I didn’t have to move it.

So I started on it Sunday and I’m now getting really good spark. I also pulled all the burnt wiring from the starting circuit and replaced it.

I lost one of the plug wires in the move, so while I wait on new ones I figured it would be a good time to clean the slip rings. How do you guys usually go about this?

I’ve seen where some people hold a stone to it while it’s running but it was mentioned that I should do it before I crank it. It looks like I might be able to get access by removing the wire between the brushes, at least on the one at the end.

What do you guys think? I’ll post some pictures of what I’m looking at.
