Wisconsin TH with US Light Power 5.5kw genset

I recently purchased a very old Wisconsin TH Genset marked US Light Power 5.5kw. Runs on Propane, and has electric start via the generator end. Info is as follows;

I forgot something. If your TF is a magneto type ignition, you can use one of the single cylinder solidstate points replacments chips in you mag. I am using this in the mag on a THD.

If you want to appreciate old quality, check out these pics... Seeing as the electronics were all rusted away, what do you guys think I should fuse this thing with? I was thinking at least a 30A on the main leads. The nameplate states 47.8 A @ 115. Did I mention I LOVE this website...

Why fuse it at 30a fuse (30 X 115= 3450w) if the rating is much higher? I would use a 40 or 50 amp fuse, depending on how "idiot proof" you want it to be.

I just wanted a sanity check...The only protection on the generator when I opened it up was a 25A thermal overload hooked to a couple of relays. I believe this was to protect the generator during cranking. It was rusted solid, and also melted. The gen head still works fine and puts out plenty of AC. This is a 4 pole unit with two main leads coming from the head. Since I need lugs to hook everything up anyway, I'll look for something I can bolt right in. I'm thinking 45A fuses/breakers (provided my main leads are heavy enough). Thanks for the reply. Mike

Be careful selecting overcurrent protection for your genset. The safest approach would be to use a 50 amp fuse. If you want to use a breaker, find one intended for use with a genset. DO NOT use a general-purpose circuit breaker of the type you'll find in your home's electrical service panel.

The circuit breakers in your electrical service panel were designed to protect WIRING, not EQUIPMENT. Being made to sell for a low price, the calibration (trip current and time delay curves) are quite 'loose.' When selected properly, electrical service panel circuit breakers will (at least should) keep the house from burning down but countless motors, appliances and the like have burned out despite the 'protection.'

The main technical issue is "fault current." The electrical power grid has nearly unlimited current available in the event of a short circuit ("fault") or overload. In the event of a short circuit tens of thousands of amps can (very briefly) be drawn from a residential electrical service. Household circuit breakers were designed with this fact in mind. They need this big-time 'kick in the pants' to trip. It all happens so quickly that the wiring doesn't have time to heat up despite the massive current.

On the other hand, a genset has a relatively small amount of fault current available. A generator that can provide 50 amps under normal load conditions might only be able to pump out a fault current of 75-100 amps into a short circuit or overload. A 50 amp breaker electrical service panel breaker cannot be counted on to trip and clear the fault. The genset just doesn't have the same sort of "kick in the pants" current available.

After thinking it over, I've decided to go the old safe route and use a couple of big Buss fuses for the internal main leads. I have another generator I restored and used a screw in house fuse for the mains. (see before and after Pics). It is an old winco and runs like a champ. I'll add a nice power distribution panel to the Wisconsin. Thanks for all the info. Shootist
